Thank you; I see Hammerite do a direct to galvanised paint - would this obviate the need to etch-prime?

Temporarily but it will flake off.

Do it proper first time, wash it, couple of coats of acids etch primer then normal primer then whatever colour paint you like on top then it will last

Later when I am home I will look at the cans I have in the garage, I know one of the acid etch primers I have I am quite impressed with I just can't remember the brand lol

I've used the Hammerite special finishes primer on mine for galvanised metal. It etches it first. Was paint applied only boring part was doing the mesh.
 
Try n post a pic as it's real heavy duty.
