Not sure what the material is but the bull-bars are soft, black and sponge-like and carry two spotlights. Wondering if it would look better if I removed the bars - at least then I could change a bulb in the headlights in one day. Has anyone done this?

I will do that in Jan when I get back home. But I will have to get the spots relocated. I can start the WD40 treatment now..........should take a week or so to loosen the bull bar mounts.
 
A metal one made the steering heavy, doubt you feel any advantage so what does it look like? If faded or broken etc get rid. If it looks ok get rid if you prefer and ebay the bar

That ain't no Bull-bar, that's a Nudge-bar, that would disappear up a bulls bottom if you were to hit one.
A proper Bull-bar, (alternate Australian name, 'Roo-bar), resembles a farm gate, looks gawd ugly, weighs enough to warrant new HD springs on the front axle and guarantees that if you do hit something, big or small, it will spread the damage right across the front of your Disco.

Nudge Bar - that's what it is! Couldn't find it in my head! Anyway, yours looks better than mine, suits the motor. I'm just not sure about mine. Maybe I'll grow into it but apart from bullying a few folk what else can I do with it? Happy New Year!

To be quite honest I usually remove these overrated and mostly overpriced "Bars" from all my 4 wheel drives, I removed it from my last Disco and a few Toyotas I owned, I left it on this current Disco because I did not have an original front bar to put back on.
I have had a heap of discarded tow bars, bull bars, spare wheel carriers, brush bars and side steps sitting in storage waiting to go to the "scrappies".
It is all up to the individual taste I guess but I have not seen a benefit in fitting one, (I have never personally fitted one and usually end up buying a used vehicle with one fitted, just 'cos it's there, to be removed), these things exist as a way to spend the 4x4's owners money, along with a lot of other basically unnecessary "strap on" bits, most stuff just adds weight and gives little benefit, with the exception of aftermarket diff locks,(my opinion only), but it keeps the accessory shops in business. My motto for the average road user, "stock is best, unless it's a competition vehicle".
Much of the vehicles ability exists in the skill of the operator.
