I'm on my second set of bulkhead vent seals in two years, yes the infamous blue box......if it rains heavily the windscreen gutter overflows (it is clean) and the water comes in through the vents........it also comes in when driving in rain......its a td5 bulkhead and vents on a 300 tdi 90.....the seals I currently have are self adhesive and stick to the flap, is there a better solution (genuine parts?) or should (or could) I try the earlier type that are glued to the bulkhead?

Thoughts?

No, it's not supposed to leak!

This was discussed not so long ago.
I tried the stick on foam ones and they leaked, others found them ok.
I fitted the older rubber type that stick to the aperture and they are still good 10yrs later.

I fitted the rubber ones to the bulkhead but also modified the lever pivot points which gives extra closing force and added a strip of s/a foam on the back lower edge and sides of the flaps too.

Can't say if it's worked as it's still sat in the workshop being rebuilt.

I replaced these seals on my 300 TDI (now sold) and initially I thought how good the adhesive was on removing the paper backing strip - but I soon realised that additional adhesive is required because after a short period of use the original stickiness disappears and the seal no longer stays in shape. Remove the bonnet and the flaps and use a contact adhesive as well as the sticky backing on the seal. By removing the flaps they can be positioned more precisely.

Cheers for the replies folks, I've got some rubber ones in the mail to glue to the bulkhead and have also found a mod for the operatong arms which I will do while its all in bits...again!....

Where did you get the rubber seals from? And what is the mod to the arms? Mine leak like a sieve so much so that I was going to mastic the poxy things shut and be done with them.

are you leaving them long enough... the foam ones need time to compress and seal effectively.

Mine leaked straight away,bloody things.......
Rubber glue to the bulkhead type have arrived and have been fitted, jet wash and the seals didn't leak........result
