My bulkhead is rotting across the top rail, below the windscreen, between and around the wipers. Also there is some rot on the upright part inside behind the windscreen.

I have had the ends repaired around the door hinges, also had some repairs in the footwells last MOT. So I am thinking the rest of the bulkhead is ok for a couple more years.

Is this a MOT fail? Is it a major job to repair, probably taking the screen out? and is it possible to get a plate for the wiper mounts?

It's a 1991 110. And it's red. Thanks
 
Any corrosion on the bulkhead is a MOT fail as it is a major structural item. You can get patches for the corners from YRM Metal Solutions they may do the centre section as well?

But if it's already been welded on the dioor pillars and it going in the middle. I'd say it was time for a replacement bulkhead.
 
as far as the mot is concerned, i am under the impression that as long as the corrosion is not within 30cm of a 'prescribed area' (seatbelt mounts, brake component mounts, steering/suspension) and does not present a sharp edge to injure pedestrians you should be ok...:confused::confused:

No you are under the wrong impression the MOT states, that any Corrosion on or within 30cm of a structural component or on any component that carries a safety critical part, is a failure. The whole of the bulkhead is a structural component and it carries the brake servo and brake lines, as well as the steering column all are safety critical components and it also the carries the doors and windscreen frame

So any major corrosion on the bulkhead should be an instant failure. .

ive got in my manual- ' any deliberate modification, EXCESSIVE corrosion, damage fracture or inadequate repair not within a prescibed area which adversely affects braking or steering by reducing the strength or continuity of a main load bearing structure' (also the sections on prescribed areas also apply)

obviously this is open to personal interpretation- if the tester thinks it has an adverse affect etc.. each case would have to be judged on its own merits..;)

I guess like alot of mot points this could be quite subjective, but if its in a structural area like the bulkhead that is a bit of a faff to repair, regardless of whether it is an issue in the mot, its probably better to do something about it sooner rather than later.
