Hello,

I'd be really grateful if somebody could have a look at a couple of pictures I took of a Defender 110 bulkhead and tell me how bad they think the rust is:

This is taken from the passenger door - the rust is behind the dashboard trim, which is the black thing to the right:

There was no rust on the outside of the bulkhead, but there was rust down by the door hinges, along the line of the door-frame.

I didn't know how bad this was, so I walked away from this one, but I'm not sure what's reasonable with a 10-15 year old Defender - if anybody would be kind enough to comment, it'd be a great help.

Also, having now looked at a couple of Defenders, the ones I've seen have all had some oil under the gearbox - is this normal or have I just had bad luck so far?

One more question (sorry to be all questions - please be patient with me:)) - is there a fuel-pump in the tank of a Defender 110? If so, does it normally make much noise? One Defender I looked at, it sounded like an electric buzzer going, which seemed a bit noisy to me...

Thanks very much :)

TD5 pump should be light buzzing just like any modern car once noisy its on last legs.

Thanks for that :)

Sorry, I should have said; I'm looking for a Defender 110 at the moment, so I'm looking at 300Tdi's and Td5's - this was a Td5.

Cheers.

Thanks Lynall - this was definitely more than just buzzing - I thought the truck had a warning buzzer going...

Thanks :)

its easier to fix gearbox and more cost effective than repairing rot ,110 not as popular as90 fid one with good chassis and body work

Thanks for that - I've seen pictures of bulkheads being repaired and I can see it's not a job I'd be keen to take on...

Cheers.

Mine is like that.. Maybe not quite so bad but il be tackling that maybe this month but if not, next. Il get some pics and stuff.

Never seen rot on the inside?? Guessing that is from old door rubbers not been replaced or windows left open very often!

Yep the door rubber is nackred it rains inside quite alot! Theres anyway a draft coz air blows right through, like the vents is open slightly!

previous owner used fibre glass to try and repair it .... i knew that before i bought it - before i cared about fixing it. End of the month - sorn - roof off , windscreen off , weld in door frames, top corners and probably the windscreen channel.

ill cut it off and look inside before i buy any parts ....

foot wells are not in bad condition- behind the dash is not in bad nick , looking in from the engine bay its not in bad nick. and lookin in next to the door like the original chap it looks good

i aint restoring to sell - im fixing to keep it road legal for offroading for a bit longer ;) - if i put a new bulkhead on id end up putting on a new chassis as waste of time doing one without the other frankly - and if i was going down that route im sure id probably look at a better donor !
