I was surprised how easy mine came out, although I had the head off and on the bench, well pleased as the head stands me and arm and a leg lol, the question I keep asking myself is should I sell it or keep it just Incase !
 
Hi Vizlak, What year is your "spare" head? I may be in the market for another head if my newly calibrated injectors dont fix my white smoke (burning fuel) issues.

"Guides" maybe I should have used these. The head was still in the engine bay! Maybe I'm just crap at getting bolts out lol.. hopefully the next broken bolt will be easier! Oil pump bolt at the weekend, after I rebuild the rocker end of business. Let's see how the cross member bolts come out..

These land rovers ... can't live with em. Can't live without em!
 
Some differences, external fuel return pipe etc. Been discussed on here a few times.
The cast number is key identifier. Also do your injectors have green plastic tops on top of the springs?
If they do then its a 15P.

Yes the injectors are green plastic tops ! Can send photos if needed as its in my outbuilding wrapped up !
 
Good evening, just a quick update on my progress with the rocker bolts.

As I mentioned i helicoiled the holes to take M10 bolts but embarrassingly I never checked that M10's would go through the rocker shaft holes. They don't! Oops.
Anyway the rocker has gone to my local engineers for some drill therapy and then I will see if I can get the top put back together..

Is there some positive location for the caps (eg dowels) other than the bolts? If not you're likely to be in trouble.
 
why m10 and not m8 ,one of the good things about helicoils is you need to remove material to add the insert

The part of the rocker carrier that the bolts go down through is slightly bigger than m8. I wanted to get a good thread for the heli's, so I went M10. The m8 thread wouldn't be deep enough to hold the heli's...

I wouldn't be drilling out the rocker shaft !

Why not? It's just 2 holes that need to be 1mm bigger. I just don't have a drill bit or the engineering tools to get through carbon steel.. drilling 2 holes out shouldn't cause any issue
 
Quick update: the rocker shaft has successfully been drilled out to accept the bolts.

I thought it was made of carbon steel, but it's actually case hardened mild steel.

20 quid for the job to be done, so not bad at all and hopefully start putting the old girl back together this next few evenings...
 
So... the rocker shaft is bolted back on, the helicoils worked a treat, timed the injectors and put the cover back on.
If anyone else find there selves in this situation I would now give my vote on using helicoils. Save the expense and time of stripping the head down.

Holy ****, the car won't fire up now..

Time for a new thread...
