replacing cylinders and linings on the swb s3 rear, neither side has a locking plate fitted, is this because some lazy bugger didn't fit them or are these 109 rears?

even so, looking in the manual if these are 109 rears that strip of metal used to hold the locking plate in place should be holding the shoes together at the bottom if I am reading the manual correctly.

thx, that does show the plates nicely.

I notice also your springs are in front of the shoes, mine are behind, is that also wrong or does it not matter as long as they are in the right hole.

I should imagine it is a lot easier to get them on putting them they way yours are.

mine are 10 inch shoes so I am guessing some lazy sod just hasn't fitted locking plates. brakes have been this way since I bought it in 2009, never had any stopping problems till one of the rear cylinders failed recently.

oh sorry, they are a pain when they are behind the shoes.

I tend to put the springs onto the shoes off the axle then manhandle the shoes with springs into place using physical strength

as long as both ends move out when the pedal is pressed it should be ok, when there is no pressure in the system only one end might move

your black springs in the second set of photos are in different holes from the first set, maybe the reds aren't in the holes you had them in before.

looking at the full photos of yours, mine do appear to be normal swb rears so I will order some locking rings.

zooming in on the manual pics, looks like my springs should be on the back of the shoes

Joe yours is missing the little securing plate at the bottom to prevent the shoes coming off the pin. It has a large hole which goes over the pin and 2 small bolts which go in the 2 holes on the shoe

thx, my s1 has them and I thought the locking plates should be there.

worrying since I have had the truck for 6 years and they have never been on. when I did the s1 I found the locking plates were on the leading shoe! Can you trust anything you buy without stripping it down.

if I ever buy another series the drums will be coming off straight away.

Blackburn, you're a life saver. Just looked and realised that I have put two of the same ones on one wheel!! Now everything is going together nicely. Thanks
