Could anyone give me an idiots guide to replacing the brake pads on my 51 plate td5?

When i last tried it on my old 300tdi i managed to split the caliper and ended up having to get the lot properly bled:confused: .

Cheers.

1 jack up the car and take the wheels off
2 undo the bottom 12mm bolt and swing the caliper up
3 pull the caliper towards the car to remove the top pin (no need to remove the bolt)
4 take the old pads out
5 clean the carrier with a wire brush to get all the dust and crap out
6 put a little copper slip on the edges of the pads and fit them to the carrier
7 squeeze the pistons in the caliper back
8 slide the caliper top pin in and swing the caliper down
9 fit the new 12mm bolt in the bottom (supplied with the pads)
10 repeat the above for the other side
11 fit the wheels and lower the car to the ground
12 pump the brake till its hard
13 road test and bed in the brakes

Clutchdust's description sounds fine, I've had to take mine out and free them off after they got full of muck and siezed. It's an easy job, so long as nothing's seized...

Job done.:D
Took less than an hour.Things werent that crudded up so it was easy.

I was slightly worried that there was still roughly 40% of the pad wear left yet they werent rubbing all the disc.Does this mean my callipers/pistons are knackered??

Thanks again

possibly. also check the master cyl.
you need to find out what the problem is though. you cant have a brake problem.

Sorry i should have explained myself better.

The problem is with the rear only. The fronts are working 100% but the rear discs had developed a dull area right on the outer edge. This is now polishing up nicely with the new pads in.
