Went to overhaul the brakes today and found on the front passenger side black oil on the shoes and bownish oil on the centre as per picture.

Any advice on what is going on would be appeciated.

Looks like the hub seal is away, pull back the rubber boots on the wheel cylinder aswel and make sure there is no brake fluid leaking. New hub seal, make sure the bearings are ok, check axle breather aint blocked. New shoes, I have seen shoes washed down and heated to sweat the oil out, but dont go that route.

Thanks I have new shoes and brake cylinders to go on all the way round. As you can see on the pic these brakes on this wheel are fairly new apart from the oil.
When I check the Haynes manual it does not mention hub seal. Is it another name ?
I have replaced the axle breather.

that looks to be emulsified oil to me (water in oil) and a shot hub seal ...

i know nothing about landys (yet) but that is my guess

There's a point, you been wading without a kit and filled your axle with water. When the axle is hot it sucks water in like a lizard drinking, you said you replaced the breather so I guess it was missing. I took my breathers right inside my motor well away from water.

I'd be inclined to replace the hub, swivels seals on both sides, then drain the diff oil if there any change in colour from normal, pull the diff, clean casing out, fit a new diff flange seal and treat the axle to some new oil.

If it's not broke dont fix it, if the diffs full of thick sludge you could flush it out with paraffin.

never use paraffin - it will make the steel corrode overnite - use petrol.
but leave it to evaporate fully before refilling.

I have not been wading. But when I first got it I gave it a good service and topped up oils. So I guess by doing that it was low befote with the brow being old oil and the black being new oil ?.

I will strip it down and see what I got.

Black oil is old oil, the brown stuff could be mixed with water but the diff and gearbox oils are normally a brown colour. Drain it off if you are worried its easy and you can see if any **** comes out with it, bits of metal etc.

Brake fluid mixed with brake lining/brake drum dust makes a very black mess.

Make sure the slave cylinder seals are not leaking first. This is an easy job, and if it's the cause could save a heap of work.
