Here's a good one! When i put my foot on the brake, the headlights come on (on sidelight-beam). This means that as i am slowing down for a dangerous junction, people think i am flashing them!

Also when i put the headlights on (on sidelight), the brake lights come on.

It's only a matter of time!

When i took out the brakelight fuse it didn't happen, so that has isolated the short to between the fuse box and the rear lights (i think) - anyone got any ideas where these two may be likely to meet and cause a short, just to help narrow down the size of the haystack i'm looking for the needle in?

I did have this problem before, but it disappeared of its own accord for a while!

Cheers

my mate had a problem when he braked his rear fog and reverse light came on and when he selected reverse the fog and reverse came on.he sorced his to an earth problem and in the back inside he removed the inner cover and a wire had chaffed on the metal on the body and was causing a problem, might be worth having a look

Cheers, will have a look there in the morning - is that just behind the metal cover in the corner inside the lights?

Maybe i should check the voltage on the chassis for an earth too - i assumed that coz it was just these two interacting, it was just between these two wires, but will have a look there first!

Ta!

I'd start by examining the wiring behind the light fittings and under the covers in the rear corner of the tub.
If that all looks OK, try running a new earth from the rear light to the tub.

Do the lights come on at normal intensity?
If so it is a short somewhere as the bulbs are getting full voltage.
If they come on at reduced brightness then it is more likely an earth problem as they will be getting reduced voltage through another bulb.
Its the old parallel or series circuit thingy.

If yer gets stuck, bring it round ear on Friday and I'll get me multimeter out.

Cheers, will check em out tomorra and may well pop over on Fri if i can't find it - these things are always easier to trace if there's 2 of you!

HA!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers chaps, jaust went out and unscrewed the offside rear tin box cover inside and the problem was obvious - and a quick fiddle round with it and some why-are-you-in-so-late tape and hopefully the problem is sorted! (At least if it goes again i'll know the most likely place, although knowing my luck it will spontaneouslt start doing it again without warning as i'm approaching a really bust crossroads and slowing down!)

Ta anyways - fookin hate landy electrics, and the whole needle in the haystack thing of finding shorts, mostly they just kind of sort themselves out in time but with this one it was a race as to whether it would be before someone pulled out in front of me thinking i was flashing them!

I the same problem a while back headlights flashed when I braked and I could not turn off the engine while the lights were on Wires behind the reversing light had fused togeather but I managed to blow the fuse for the alternator while fixing it two days later no start. I did not know what the fook was wrong so I parted with 50 euro to an auto electrition to sort it out (change a fuse) Im not a great fan wiring either

It's back with a vengeance...all above symptoms only i have also noticed that now with no ignition on (no key even in the lock) if the sidelights are on, when i put my foot on the brake some solenoid in the fuse-box clicks and the fans and stereo come on (oh and the windscreen wipers will work, but only REALLY slowly)!

Took both rear lights apart and have spent the afternoon playing around in the fuse box, lots of strange things but still got the problem!

Any other pointers would be most appreciated

Cheers!

use your jump leads to temp connect from the neg batt to the chassis at the rear - see if the fault is still there, it's usually bad earths that cuase such issues, and running a new wire in is faster than finding the fault

Righto, will give it a go tomorrow - have been drivin round with the sidelights on (and hence the brakelights on - they dun't half get hot!!!) just so someone dont mistake me braking for me flashing them at a junction - i figured it was safer that way but not have any brake lights (what's behind me don't concern me too much!) but it is a bit of a liability, does wonders for the driving technique!

Oddie. I've just bin out sorting out my rear lights. I had to drill out one of the screws holding the rear cover in place on the drivers side. The fault wasn't there in the end. It was under the rear wheel arch below the floor grommet. The snow and mud had been getting thrown up and was causing the wires to rub. It's too cold and slushy to do mine properly now but I have done a temp fix.

I think this fault first started not long after a particularly good off road or laning session and the wiring to the rear is very exposed on mine, i will have a good look under there as well - the rear wiring is a spaghetti nightmare! I can see a day ahead with the multimeter - MOT coming up too, and managed to break my driver side mirror laning today! Credit crunch schmeddit schmunch eh!!!

I gorra spare mirror in me garidge - will check which side later.
Cheers, don't think the side matters coz the head just unscrews (the head broke off and then i broke the mirror jutrying to fix it back on!!!)
he's not long replaced the engine

Noooo....don't make me change the engine again!!!

Will wire up some bits and check all me earths tomorra, but my limited brain does not compute how putting the brake on could turn on the in-car-fans (and pretty much everything ingition-wise), if it was an earth problem wouldn't it just mean that some circuits don't work full stop? Thought i was OK with electrical gubbins (having just re-wired me flat!!!) but landy electrics (as with all else) seem to be a bit heath-robinson!!!

mine ave been ****in me reet arf.best thing ive done is replaced me engine earth, starts way better now and my heater has stopped eletructeing me too.

on rebuildin mine ive run a length of plastic corrugated conduit right through chasis from bulkhead up into rear tub and from side to side across rear so hoping this will keep it all protected, have also fully rewired it putting connection in dry protected areas
