How do ya miserable old bunch

Anyone have any idea what the "BRAKE' light on the dashboard means when it is illuminated. Usually when I apply the handbrake only the (P) light illuminates, but for some reason today when I apply the handbrake the (P) light and the 'BRAKE' with a little exclamation mark is lighting up as well. Sometimes it is flickering and other times it is on solid, but only when the handbrake is on.
