Anyone got any ideas?

I've had my 110 CSW for a few weeks now and only really done short trips in it with no problems from the brakes. But having now done a couple of longer journeys involving motorways, I've notice a reoccurring issue while braking!

There is a knocking and almost a giving feeling from the brakes just as the vehicle is about to stop. When leaving the motorway on the slip road for example, the brakes are fine with no problems right up until I'm at a few mph and just about to stop.

From what I can tell it's the front wheels, possibly the near side wheel.

It doesn't happen on shorter journeys.

So, any ideas, anything I can easily check?

I've also posted a thread about problems with starting her too - see here

Thanks

Neil

Mad rush of replies there K.

If its new to you, then have you checked the pads for material...? Maybe low/contaminated/down to metal and trying to seize on when used for a longer/heavier braking from speed? Easily see the pad material once the wheel is off just peek in the top of the caliper.

Very uneven wear on opposing pads in the same caliper might be corroded/stuck pistons - just replaced all of mine with Zeus pistons, major improvement....... A

As above. Stuck piston or both on one calliper heating up fluid and binding on heating up disk causing warping and judder.

Failing that the pressure is being held in the hydraulic system somehow.

Worth checking some simple things as well, albeit wouldn't expect them to only show issues at speed:

- Check calipers are tight

- Check front prop shaft UJs

Have a look at the discs too. They do wear away over time and depending on whether yours are solid or vented, the manual will say what the acceptable minimum thicknesses are. Do they appear to be scored or rippled in any way? If you spin the hub with the wheel off the ground to they appear to be rotating evenly, or are the out of true? It's no problem if they have deteriorated, as they're replaceable, but if you're working on your brakes anyway it might be worth thinking about replacing them if they look less then perfect.

Thanks for the comments.
A friend has her at the moment replacing the timing belt but I did mention to him about the brake issue, he said he'll look at them.

I'm not sure what time he has this week, but I'll certainly take the wheels off when I get it back and look at the disks etc if my friend cannot.

From what I have seen while having my head under the her, the brake disks look rather rusty, not sure if that's an issue, never really paid much attention to such things before buying my Defender!
