mike, i have had this problem, first off brakes would stick on when handbrake applied over night, usually associated with wet weather or going through deep puddles, i did the same as you , stripped down, lubed and made sure all was free to move, and this seemed to work for a while, then just as yours, they really stuck on and overheated drum, so i replaced the hand brake cables, it cured the problem

Might be worth spraying some wd40 up the hand brake cables while your in there.....m

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE!

Correct way for self adjuster spring to be, notice it is under tension and around the back of the ratchet.





Completely incorrect way!!!:doh: Notice spring on side of ratchet.

Took a while to realise this, as when i took the brakes (offside) off the for the first time I just rebuilt them and didn't give it a second thought.
Then today whilst checking the nearside, the better half said that the spring was in a different place.

This will have happened when I had both wheel rear bearings replaced earlier this year. The blokes a good chap and i can trust him with most stuff, but he must have got the monkey to rebuild the brakes. Will be having a word in his ear soon:boxing:

Hope that the spring is the cause of you issues, but which ever position the spring is fastened to it still just gives downwards pressure.
The main issues are normal the arm, the hand brake cable fastens to. They don't pivot freely due age last one I did took a good hour to totally free. If the problem persists then would look at them.

Fortunately the handbrake arm is fine.
If you look at the bottom picture you will notice the spring isn't under load and wasn't exerting any downwards pressure. That led to the ratchet not holding the self adjuster. So each time the handbrake was used it wound out a little bit more. Eventually causing one side to stick.
If it wasn't caused by that I'm going to sit and gibber in a corner

was it the side from the lower picture that has caused the problems? as that's the one with the spring correctly located.

We must have different brakes as the top picture is correct and the bottom one is in the wrong place.
If you look at the ratchet arm there are 3 different location points, presumably to accommodate different models.

mike the top pic is incorrect, . go with the bottom pic, there is a hole where the spring locates, not as in the top pic

No, behind the ratchet then over the top. Checked it numerous times, got the better half to check it!
There's more than one photo that shows it this way.
But sounds like people have the spring in numerous places. So who's to say.

i think its irrelevant which way the spring is fitted, it can only adjust once there is sufficient movement (ie lining wear ) and it then can move the ratchet.

you will most probably not have the same problem again for a few months,
