Hi all. any ideas why my brake and reversing lights have stopped working. also when you are in reverse and put the windscreen wipers on the back should also work but it doesn't. I have checked the fuse but it's ok. any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Russ. should mention it's a 2001 freelander.

I have had the same on a v6 auto. It was the switch on the rear of the ignition. Worn/burnt contacts. Fault was intermittent and got worser. Do the lights work when the electric's are on and the engine oft?

Hi. Thanks for your advice. Just been messing and if I ram it into revese hard the reversing lights work and the wiper so I presume that switch is on its way out. as for the brakes still no luck so presume that switch has also gone. just a coincidence. anyway im booked into the garage in the morning as I don't have time to mess with it. and its cold and wet. will post the outcome.

Yes, it sounds like the reverse light switch. I've had to replace mine (although my reverse lights still don't work, so now I have to chase the problem back through the loom - I'm hoping it is a poor contact with one of the bullet connectors, because driver's side fuse box F2 is fine and the bulbs are intact.

Which brake lights aren't working? If all, it is interesting to note that both the brake and reverse lights share the same F2 (10A if I recall correctly) fused power supply - so that may be your culprit.

On my 2001, only the nearside rear brake light is not working. Again, not the bulb (replaced with new to be sure). The rear tail light works fine, so the common earth is fine. So either a corroded contact inside the bulb holder, or a damaged wire/connector somewhere. Again, more fun with the multimeter and an aerosol can of contact cleaner!

Hi all brake lights have gone but fuse is fine so looks like the switch. good luck with yours.
All sorted now.

The brake light problem turned out to be the bulb holder - the electrical contact just needed teasing up and out to make a decent contact with the bulb's electrodes and Bob's your mother's brother - fully functional brake lights!

The reversing lights turned out to be a badly corroded loom bullet connector to the reverse switch (which had already been replaced and proven faulty).

Now all present and correct :D

Sorry to resurrect, all three of my brake lights have stopped working. 2001 Freelander Auto TD4. The reversing lights work, I believe they're on the same fuse. Does anyone have an idea what could be the cause.

Why do they call this day Good Friday?

Brake light switch would be my first guess.
