After my exploits of rummaging around the front wheel area,
can anyone answer some questions re: braided hoses.

It's for Discovery 1 Non ABS Solid Disc

1. the kits available, come with three hoses, I can work out where two of them go :) , but where does the third ?

2. the little metal pipe that goes into the calliper. most peeps on here have replaced theirs with copper. are there any braided options ? or is that not practical ?

3. is the 'bendy ' shape of the little pipes important ? or are they like that so they don't get in the way of stuff ?

Third one is for back axle
No
So they don't catch on stuff:)

considering the condition of the calliper, it was just a thought that I might change them as a matter of course.

i just googled 'discovery 1 braided brake hoses' and looked at the results. they were all about the 40 quid mark for set of three.

is there anywhere that sells copper pipes ready made ?

I know you can buy a kit and DIY, but I would probably only use it for the pipes once, so would be a bit of expensive kit.

That's what I thought, till I went to local motor factors, bought a coil of pipe and fittings and a flare kit off ebay .. I've used it so much since I don't know how I got by without it .. ;)

This is the same tool I bought and whilst it looks complicated it's incredibly easy to use and makes good flares every time .. ;)

I just use my hands and time, don't force it, persuade it to go how you want it to. ;)

Im going to try these hoses on my 300tdi disco. Is all the fittings the same or is there anything else you need to get to fit them? Good to have everything ready to do the complete job. Going to replace the rusty steel pipes with copper too.

I made up a stopend from a male connector and pipe, crimped at the end so this could be put into the flexi pipe connector to stop, as much as possible, any fluid leaks .. you'll always get some 'cos there's fluid all the way to the caliper, but this meant I could work on the new lines and caliper without worrying about the master cylinder fluid level.

If you're going to change the caliper brake pipe to copper too, I'd suggest you just cut the old one and use a hex socket to release the fitting and bleed nipple, much less chance of screwing it up, which is surprisingly easy to do ..

The 'spring' that holds the flexi line onto the bracket is usually corroded, clean it first and use a smear of copper grease on the bracket to help it fit back, or use a new one.

I put braided on a classic rr I had and. It transformed the brakes. peddle feel was brilliant. Gonna do same on my project disco. lugo

Ok got my Goodrich hoses and starting to make up the new copper pipes too. Front hoses seem simple just put them through the hole and secure with the clip - done but the rear hose to the axle has me stumped. I put it through the hole but its not very secure onto the underbody of the car. Do I need to get another fitting to secure it or have I missed something? Oh yes and found at least 5 spots that need welding once Iv got this job out the way!

Well just finished my brakes new copper pipes, replaced the rubber flexi hoses with Goodridge braided and O/H the calipers with new pistons and seals result after bleeding - WOW what a difference! cant believe such a change - anyone who has not got braided hoses get yourself to Paddocks and get a set for £30 and get them on good job its not a v8 id be tempted to drive fasted with my new stopping confidence.
