what type of sheet would I need to buy? thickness, etc..?

thing is, i've been reading this website - MIG Welder Buyers Guide
and it says to do gas welding there is the need of wind shielding if welding outside.....

i can't get the disco in the garage, first because it's full of bikes and second i wouldnt fit lol

or... can it be done outside?

use yer hand as a sheild, or cardboard if it's windy - be inventive it's only wind

I do all mine outside - try and protect your work if yu can - a tarpaulin over it helps. You mite need to turn the gas pressure up a bit more outside - so make sure that yo Mig welder will take full size gas bottles, not those silly little things.

h - and i forgot to say - i am using 0.8mm to 1.2mm galvanised steel sheet.

JP....for years now I've had a guy that run a company called BEAST motorsport do all the work I can't do on my various landies. He bases his reputation on doing really good work, has all the equipment needed and charges really decent rates for work. He's in Wick, about 15 mins from Bath and he'll no doubt do you a good deal if you mention my name.

Let me know if you want his number. I would trust him to do any work on my Landies.

If you want a Master Welder to do it for a good price though, my brother in law is a master welder and lives just over the Old Severn Bridge. He's fully set up as he does LPG conversions and has been working on Landies for 20 years!

Let me know if you want details for either of them, but if you do the work yourself.....good luck!

Actually......if you do want to do it yourself.....let me know any questions you have and I'll run them by my brother in law as there's not much he doesn't know about welding and Land Rovers.

1. Buy MIG - min 150A
2. "obtain" bits of steel - don't matter which
3. practice,practice - do little projects
4. practice some more
5. curse profusely
6. and again
7. practice some more
8. buy a bigger gas bottle
9. practice and curse some more
10. mend your disco - you might as well start now as it wont be any better next year and even if you're happy spending a few quid now, in 12 months yer missus will moan about it "needing more money" spending

Quick update on this...
first thanks for all the tips and advice and until yesterday I was going to follow the advice...
missus won't be a problem as I'm the one who wears the trousers here.. lol

but anyway... was tyding up the garage yesterday with the bikes outside and the Disco covered in mud on the drive when a bloke comes over and says..
sorry mate, my missus said there was a big disco parked here and I had to come and have a nose..
cutting a long story short, he's my neighbour ( I had noticed he has 2 discos parked outside) and he worked for Land Rover for over 10 years until 6 years ago he opened his own garage..
he only does Land Rovers and has all the equipment as a dealer has (diagnostics stuff, etc..).. just outside he found and solved 2 problems on my mate Disco, who had come over for a chat and the guy knows everything about them, so he's going to do the welding for me..
and said any problems I may have to knock on his door, if he thinks I can do it, he'll tell me how and teach me, if not he'll take it to the garage.

Just a really friendly guy, he even said he wasnt trying to get any work for him as he's fully booked till mid April.

of course I still have to pay him, but I rather pay him than someone else, as the way he talked about the landies completely sold it to me that he knows what he's talking and knows what he's doing…
He really sounded passionate about landys, top bloke….

On a full service on a 300tdi (my mates), including changing all oils (engine, transfer, etc), filters, greasing UJ's, shafts and do a safety check on everything (pads, props,etc..) he said around £250

what do people think about it? good price? reasonable?

My mate was quoted from a local garage (not 4x4 or landy specialist), £150, but as he says, and I agree with him, rather pay 100 on top, but be sure that a proper job is going to be done by someone that knows what they are doing and have experience on this kind of vehicles...

I'd be happy to pay £250 for a good service and that's what I do pay to have it done with a bloke local to me who is also one of those guys, like my brother-in-law that if he doesn;t know it about a landy, it's not worth knowing.

A local garage with no specialist experience will not do the same quality service for you. They'll just do the minimum they need to do. Your neighbour will not only do the service, but if he's anything like he sounds, he'll do all the extras and take a bloody good look over your disco as well and let you know what needs or will need doing soon.
