...PS: Ignore the first line of my above post, don't know what happened there.
I've figured out what happened here, this is what I was going to say: Have a close look at the dog teeth on the 1st/2nd gear synchro hub. Make sure they are not worn or you will have jumping out of gear issues. They need to be sharp cornered, not rounded. I had to replace one on my D suffix box.

Hi no nothing like that, all looks good, I'm tempted to say as new, the bearings all look new as well. I wonder if a previous owner, took it apart, realised the layshaft was knackered, changed a few things ( I haven't found a gasket in it yet!) and put new bearings in and sold it on to who I got it from.

Right finally getting around to ordering parts for this, the only layshafts I can fine are britpart...any one used one?

Not a layshaft, no, but I did ask about BP parts for gearboxes over on LRUK and several people who I have great respect for, people who know what they are talking about, said to use BP gearbox parts with no worries, so I did... several thousand miles on I've had no issues and the gearbox is working just fine. I used: 1st/2nd gear synchro hub, baulk rings, reverse pinion and shaft, shims and bearings for the transfer box intermediate gear, springs for detent balls and a gasket set. I could see no problems or evidence of shoddy manufacture in the parts I got. I did buy the rest of the bearings and seals from a local bearing supplier though, I didn't fancy trusting the bearings to a Chinese manufacturer. I'll see if I can find the thread and post the link on here. You can always find that Cyprus bloke on ebay if you don't like the idea of blue boxes though...
