I will take more pics tomorrow, still trying to work out what is what at mo!2nd gears engagement teeth also look worn what is the synchro hub that they engage with like
Nope! Not looking so good now is it? I get my gearbox bits from landroverdirect.com except for bearings and seals which I buy from a bearing supplier so that I can be sure of getting quality, (ie, NOT Chinese).
I'll take better pictures this morning... Didn't see anything wrong with anything else, but I'm no expertYes, a fortuitous accident that it 'spilled its guts', at least you now know... I reckon it needs so much that it is only worth keeping for spares or perhaps in the hope that enough second hand parts can be acquired to build a decent box. I can see that the layshaft is u/s and other expensive gears as well. I hope you didn't pay too much for it; so much for "ready to go in".
look at the straight cut teeth on lay shaft ,thats for reverse, teeth are pitted as is common thats hard facing worn offI'll take better pictures this morning... Didn't see anything wrong with anything else, but I'm no expert
first and second pic show why l/s needs replacing the third pic shows the input gear which is part of input shaft not l/s
as 3rd/4th synchro hubs go its not the worst ive seen and wouldnt have been an issue ,though you cant see the contact to gear cone areasMain shaftView attachment 157451 View attachment 157452
Only gave a quick clean, only whare is on last pic ( I think)!
suffix a layshaft 576686 is about 40 quidUnless my current box breaks soon I'm going to put this to one side for now.I'll look out for a decent layshaft and first gear and then carry on with this, I'm only doing about 1000 miles tops a year so no need to rush
Thanks again James I had a look but didn't find anything as low as that. I looked on Landover direct as someone posted above but there was no listing for series box parts. Where do you recommend to buy from pleasesuffix a layshaft 576686 is about 40 quid
1st gear 591362 about 25 though its allways best to count the teeth to ensure it hasnt been altered to a later suffix, worth checking rev idler teeth too
Land Rover Direct do supply series parts, you need the part numbers, have you got a parts book? They are out of stock of the suffix A layshaft though but Paddocks have it.Thanks again James I had a look but didn't find anything as low as that. Hi no parts book. Is the number stamped on it? I do remember there was something stamped on it, but it wasn't a line of numbers.
you need to be sure which suffix parts you need a lot of suffix a boxes were converted using an lr kit, a genuine suffix a will have a rev idler with a bush a later suffix will have a needle roller bearing, just google the part numbers, some lay shafts have a large c stamped on them that signifies it fits a suffix c and d, d can be distinguished from c as all dog teeth are coffin shaped on ds yours arentThanks again James I had a look but didn't find anything as low as that.
