My bottle jack has burst its seals. Is it possible to fix it? Anyone had one apart?
If you know the make it should be possible to get seals. Unless it is a Chinese throw away one were you would have to strip it and measure what you need.
it is the standard Land Rover one that came with the car.
Strip it and have a look then, although i don't think Landrover will supply parts for it. Bottle jacks are pretty basic things.
See if one of the small Machine Mart trolley jacks would suit.
I carry one in my RRC instead of the screw type bottle jack style thing it comes with.
Yes but £40 on the Bay!
Pedantic I know, but can you have a 'screw type' bottle jack ?
My RRC's have all had 2 ton two stage hydraulic jack from the factory.

Screw type bottle jacks
vintage stuff
They do a specific oil for Jacks.I had the red P38 standard one with the vehicle. I cocked it up jacking a big tree stump out of a mates garden, think I blew the seals.
Looked up correct filling procedure and tried with what oil I had at time (diff oil I think it was?) - no luck but still have the jack as spares.
Intention was to replace it when I see a nice one cheap but have to manage with the trolley jack

To be equally pedantic I actually said 'screw type bottle jack style thing'.Pedantic I know, but can you have a 'screw type' bottle jack ?

Neither do I, not such worry with my treads. For the life of me I cannot remember what I had in the Defender.
Currently I have no jack in the back.
Was worth a try, least when it oozes out everywhere I can now be sure seals have gone. They sure do and it is certainly not diff oil.

Perhaps I should have said 'a screw jack that bears a slight resemblance shape wise to a hydraulic bottle jack but isn't hydraulic'
Parts book says Range Rover 'Lifting jack' Part number 592220 superceded by a couple of later part numbers - also screw jacks - & then by the hydraulic bottle jack.
Which type is in your car would probably only really matter for the concours competitor
I have a jack in back but the wife wont let me use one anymore since last time I spent weekend in hospital. We have very nice RAC men round hereThat's the one. Same one used in p38 and the Disco. For the life of me I cannot remember what I had in the Defender.
I have trolley jacks but not in the car. It is just in case I get a flat. Currently I have no jack in the back.
