I've read numerous threads on water ingress into the boot locker but I'm after some specifics if possible. I have a 2000 3 door.

Jetwashed the car the other day, boot locker's full of water (the rest of the boot carpet is dry as a bone. - I thought, dodgy rear door seals, don't jet wash the back)!

That was maybe 2 days ago, I sponged out all the water and let it dry out. Over the last few days we've had a fair bit of rain and today I thought I'd check the boot locker again and it looks like this;

Now that is a lot of water from just a couple of days of rain so it's carpet up and get the sponge out again;

My questions are these;

- Bearing in mind the rest of the boot (thankfully) seems bone dry, I was wondering how is the water getting into the locker? I've looked all round the door and tail gate seals and I can't see any evidence of water at all. The only place where it seems there's not a great seal is round the rear window at the top but how can 2 days of rain get that much water in there? And if so, how on earth does it make it's way down to the locker without making anything else wet?

I'm flumoxed. I've had a series 3 in the past and I know all about Landy's and their little quirks but this one seems avoidable!

. . EDIT . . Aha, I've found some more damp tucked right down in the bottom right and bottom left hand corners!

So, I'm assuming that's where it's coming from, so it's not magically finding its way into the locker it's coming down the channels from the roof. Aanyone got any handy tips? I've read carefully pop the seal out and reposition. I've tried gently pouring water on both sides of the roof to see where the water comes down but it all seems to be staying in its channels where it's supposed to be.

I've popped out the main seal around the boot and carefully repositioned when I've re-installed the plastic trim to see if that helps

I too did what you've done, pulled everything back, trying to see if there were any tell tale signs......... but nothing. My next move is to remove the tail door panel, to see if there is a problem with the vapour barrier. It's bloody annoying!!
 
they seem to refer to 5 door models rather than 3 door but the door seal fault certainly looks a likely culprit!

The good news (*ahem*) is it's ****ing it down again so I can see if my re-fitting of the seal has helped.
 
I had the same issue, i found that the hard tops are in 3 parts, the top and both sides, i ran some sealant along the seams on the top of the hardtop( they are 2 trough lines about half a cm that run from front to back) this has stopped all water ingress in to the boot. Hope this helps
 
Its quite common for the waterproof membrane to leak if it has been damaged during replacement of the rear window regulators.
 
Yes as above, water enters rear door at window seal and can exit into car from base of door card.

But my own problems (on a 5 door) were caused by water getting into the back of the door seal (where it pushes onto the body) on the vertical sections and as it ran down it was passing around to the inner side while running down to the bottom corners and exiting onto the floor under the trim and carpet. The fix was remove the seal and put some mastic sealant in the groove before refitting. No more troubles after that in my case.

And that's what I think is the issue with mine. When I get a spare bit of time I'll remove the door card and check the membrane. If it is damaged I'll need to source some new material.......
 
Just checked mine, same as post 89. New modified door and window seals fitted last year, thought it was OK. Now carried out mod advised by other members and drilled a couple of small holes in the base of the locker, at least it drains away now :)

I was going to do that, only as a short term fix, because I want to fix the leak, not just get rid of the water. But as drilling a hole will only make another potential place to rust, I'll wait until the weather improves then have another go at it.
 
yup I really want to try and avoid drilling a hole (or holes!), much prefer to stop the water ingress full stop if at all possible!

My update today after pulling the seals and resetting them yesterday and a lot of rain last night is that tentatively I seem to have a dry boot locker :D

I've also been driving to work and back today with the boot locker propped open a bit so that the heat from the exhaust evaporates any dampness in there.

I shall keep an eye on it and feedback and further dryness or dampness :)

Good luck, let us know if you succeed. As mine has had all the mods done I think I'll just have to live with the holes, rust not a problem as I waxoiled the exposed bare metal (making sure the holes were still open)

After I got the door regulated, the problem got away. It seems to me that the door wasn't able to firmly touch the rubber seal on the car's side. Now everything is OK. I even got it to the car wash a couple of times since then, no problems at all.

Day 2 in the boot locker house and with lots more rain . . .

the boot locker still apears dry. Looks like resetting the seals has (most likely) done it! (I'm still driving about with the locker propped open slightly to help evaporation).

I will however keep an eye on it and feedback any developments because I'm still very suspicious!
 
Sounds like you may have cracked it MW. I'm hoping that my leak stems from a damaged door shedder, from when the tailgate glass was replaced:)
 
yup, it's looking positive, day 3 and with loads more rain over night we're still dry. :)

If your door shedder was damaged your dampness could well be a result of condensation forming on the tailgate and gradually finding its way in.

If it is that, MW, it's a hell of a lot for condensation. I still believe it's a combination of your issue, resetting the seals, and water ingress from the door itself. If this nice weather keeps up I'll be giving it a go at the weekend :)
