Hi am looking for advice about my boost control fitted to my 2004 facelift freelander.
Am suffering from lack of boost below 2000 rpm. Have renewed all vacuum pipes and intercooler pipes with silicone versions. Have soaked actuator arm with penetrating oil. Still no joy in getting low rpm boost. While doing this I was looking at my boost control solenoid and compared it to on line photos and U-tube videos and my boost control has two barbs and not three. This may account for lack of the mini filter dangling behind engine block. What am asking is do I need the 3 barb solenoid to get low down boost. At present nothing below 2250 rpm by 3000 rpm turbo is in full boost mode. By 4000 rpm very short later I'm changing gear to avoid red line. Going up any kind of hill or incline involves using 1st or 2nd gear or crawl up in 3rd gear at 30 mph. Any other car I have driven can manage same hills or inclines in 4th or 5th. Have run turbo cleaner through fuel tank. Turbo is obviously not completely useless. Suggestions or ideas most welcome.

If the boost control solenoid doesn't have the correct ports, then how can you know its not doing the reverse of what it's supposed to be doing?

Post a picture of the offending solenoid, but it's best to get the correct one fitted, and install the import filter too.;)

Hi try to get photo of boost solenoid.

Have you clean out the manifold, EGR, 7 MAP sensor yet, also when was the air filter last changed over, when you are talking about the boost control solenoid you are referring to the one nest to the turbo right, not the one below the EGR.

Is your EGR clean.

Is your MAP sensor clean not blocked.

2

Manifold clean inside.

3

EGR solenoid hose are all good as you say that vaccumn hoses have been changed.

referring the turbo solenoid having two barbs or outlets, does it also have a square box as here below.

If it as a square box then its most likely an EGR solenoid.

Turbo solenoid as you say should have three barbs.

Turbo boost solenoid in situ yours would be missing the filter hose line that hangs.

Hi artic 2 your reply is very helpful. EGR has been replaced with an EGR blanking item. Manifold has been cleaned out and map senser done at same time. Air filter about a 1000 miles use. Have seen a lot dirtier but getting a new one any way. The two solenoids you have photographed have confirmed that previous owner/s have fitted the wrong solenoid. The one by the EGR valve is same as one by turbo. So will need to order correct solenoid along with air filter and oil filter. Might as well change the lot at same time. Have a new filter for 3rd pipe when I got EGR blanking kit. Got plenty of new silicone hose to fit 3rd pipe and filter. When all the new parts arrive and fitted will be able to tell if problem is solved. Would explain very crafty hiding of unplugged MAF when I bought it. Only found out after i bought a new MAF thinking MAF had gone bad.

have you put the vacuum hoses the right way here is a diagram the one that comes off the "rail" number 8
freelander vacuum (2).png
goes to the back of the vacuum chamber it always looks as thought is should go to the front but no it goes to the back

Hi got new turbo boost solenoid fitted today. It has actually made it worst to drive. If I can get up to 3k then turbo comes in instantly. Bang and off you got to meet horizon a lot faster than you intended. Have checked and checked again hoses fitted correctly. Only thing I'm going to query at this point does the hose with filter need next size diameter hose up from rest of them under the bonnet. Cannot hear any strange sounds on tick over or when gently revving. Tick over is

Mine runs fine with 3mm inside diameter silicone hose. I'd suspect that either the turbo is sticking or failing, or you have a restriction in the exhaust system, maybe a clogged catalytic converter.

When revving does the Turbo actuator move at all?
You need to prove/disprove the solenoid is working

Hi everyone thanks for all the pointers. Have finally solved lack of boost. Fitted new turbo boost solenoid and attached hoses as per diagram/picture I was sent. After going through elimination of of checking every thing I started to try swapping hoses. In case I had miss read diagram/picture. Nothing made any difference at this point was getting ready on how to remove turbo. Had one last idea to try before going with remove turbo. I blocked the open air pipe which has the filter. That has solved the boost problem. Pulls like a train in any gear. Can drive around town in 5th on tick over then accelerate when leaving 30mph. Can climb hills and mountains. Cruise at 60mph on A roads with ease. Brilliant until tonight when another issue cropped up. Will post this under a new heading.
