Hi all,

Needed to mount my second spare on the bonnet for an upcoming Africa expedition.
My fears were confirmed, the striker spring is too weak for the spare (Wolf wheel + 255/85R16 KM2) so it wont pop the bonnet without help.

Is there any bonnet striker specific to be used with the spare on?

Thanks

Yes there is but I don't know the part number, I helps a friend swap out the normal one for a stronger one.

Having said that mine doesn't have a stronger Spring so I just lift the bonnet up myself. I have external catches though and removed the mechanism under the bonnet

I pull the lever inside, and keep it pulled with a couple of clothes pegs, then lift the bonnet.

What about fitting the tyre on the side like the Army with the lowering device, they removed wheels from the bonnet due to the weight and fitted some kinda rudimentary hoist.

OK, you Sir are a genius

Nothing against that, but I never saw the Wolf carrier for sale and I doubt it's legality here. Also, I like the 2nd wheel on the bonnet, it's just the opening that's bothering me

Well, I got the problem solver the most surprising way. I think this is very valuable info tho have in the forum.

It turns out a 300Tdi valve spring is not only a direct size fitment to the bonnet striker, it has also exactly the strength needed to lift the spare wheel.
In fact, it's such a direct application that makes on wonder if the mythical bonnet with spare wheel striker spring wasn't in fact a re branded valve spring

Good to know. I had a 200TDI CSW with a bonnet mounted spare, I decided to weigh the standard wheel and was amazed to see it weighed 75 lbs. The striker spring seems weak on my 300 TDI, so I might still do this mod.
