It's simple, opening the bonnet supplies the fire with instant oxygen. You don't want that.

Recovery usually get involved more in recovering broken down or crashed vehicles but we always went in with the rescue guys as they usually needed extra trained help. Getting over the radio "vehicle on its roof, smoke seen, driver trapped or not moving" really gets the adrenalin, and the truck, moving!
Once was involved in a rally in Wareham forest where there were several fires. Emptied all our extinguishers, but not over cars, over brush and other wood based stuff due to stoopid spectators.
One even decided that a good place to mount his BBQ was on a woodpile!
