First of all, sorry for the tardy response - been too busy to log in for a week or two!

Secondly - you're all mad - must be all those weekends stood in the rain swearing at Land Rovers :D !! God would only ever drive something that would let HIM/HER/IT go anywhere and everywhere (no point being the creator of all life and then never getting out amongst nature now is there?!?) - so that rules out the Hippos :p (and i'm not even going to lower myself to answering that nonsense about Japanese things). So that brings me to the only choice - 109 forward control running a cummins diesel with a turbo conversion (power and that rarity in an Land Rover - RELIABILITY) - after all, being omnipotent and all-knowing would tend to suggest knowing it's not fun breaking down in the middle of "nature"!!!

Thirdly, I thing the camera idea for lining up on the hitch is great and it's something i'm looking into options for at the moment - anyone had any experience of the wireless twin camera systems that are available all over eBay? As they can be wired or wireless i'm thinking 1 camera fixed and wired on the back of the car and 1 wireless on the back of the trailer (power feed and switch could be taken from trailer feed), I've found a few times that reversing a large trailer round corners can give several blind spots (especially with an 18" spare on the back door). The other issue with hitching though is the physical distance between towball and bottom of the tyre (although this is better now with a 2" lift on the car), trailer hitch is fairly compact and simple but caravan has much larger Alko hitch and this means there's only a small leeway in space to hitch it up - which is part of the reason for considering getting the spare out of the way. I do like the look of the swing away wheel carrier, am I right in assuming this needs a specific bumper to fit / any ideas who sells these and if there's any fabricators who make them that could adapt bumper to requirements (I want to keep parking sensors, possible add a camera at hitch level and also to have steel grill style lower light covers).
 
Our caravan has an alko hitch, but I am not sure what problem that this is causing you. We used to have a wireless camera in our horse trailer but it was an expensive one. It worlked fine until one day the camera failed and they wanted something like £50 to fix it. I bought a wired system which covers the reversing camera and the camera in the horse trailer. If either fail then camera replacements are cheap. Our reversing camera is athitch height in the bumper. Although it doesn't show the towball after using a couple of times it becomes obvious and hitching is easy.
 
Bit late with this. But if it can be fitted safely secured, do it. For visibility issues raise your seat a bit. Stacks of spare headroom in D1 or D2. Regarding bonnet weight. I am no muscle man but there is a technique to heaving up a heavy bonnet. I always mounted my spare on my series Land Rovers and am looking at mounting my 205 Avon Ranger spare on my 94 D1 bonnet.
 
Here's an idea, why not simply chuck it in the boot?
You could leave the mounting plate on or take it off. If you left it on it would only take five minutes to put the spare on it if the missus needs the boot for the dogs. Saves a ton of mucking about and expense. Lot easier than getting it off the roof if you get a puncture!
 
My boot is a two berth camper! No dogs or missus any more sadly. I want to use the rear door to mount camper related kit.
 
OK, second idea, why not mount it on the trailer? You could then put it on the roof when you go off camping.
I think it might be an idea to have two places for it, one for when you are using it for work and one for when enjoying time off.
