Stripping down my 3.5 efi for a cam change i was undoing the bolts that secure the inlet manifold into the cylinder heads. When i got to the last one it sheared, it is the forward one on the drivers side, there is about 5mm of the bolt sticking out of the cylinder head. I have drilled a hole through the centre of the bolt and put in an easy out which hasnt moved it. i have also tried some mole grips on the bit sticking out and that hasnt worked. i tried the easy out and the mole grips together to no avail. not sure what to do next, any ideas?:confused: (it has also been drowned in wd40!)
 
if the head snapped of easy out isnt going to work unless you can thin bolt walls enough ,you can weld nut on heat will loosen bolt ,hitting it forcefully will eventually loosen it as it relieves the bolt tension 5mm wouldnt be enough cold for extracror to work
 
You should have tried the molegrips first.
Try using some penitrating oil instead of WD40.
If you can get a good grip on the stud try to move it in and out a bit at a time and it should work loose.
Failing that drill it out by going slightly bigger each time .
 
tried welding a nut on and it didnt work, there is only approx 3mm left sticking out so mole grips cant grip it. will try the bigger drills tomorrow.hope it works as dont fancy having to remove the head!
 
Shouldn't of ****ed about with it I have got a really good stud extractor set from snap-on that would of undone it at 5mm
 
Nice try fett it was expensive but payed for itself already and still working so I am happy to pay the money
 
i have em too if 5mm wouldnt have been enough ,weld another nut on with welder on high ,if it doesnt work then nothing would ,sometimes they have to be drilled out,but welding nut is only way of getting heat without effecting ali,if getting hard to weld nut weld washer on then nut to washer i come across this thing daily ,there are 3 reasons why bolts shear to tight when fitted then hitting stud will eventually relieve stretch ,corrosion as probably with yours steel into ali ,needs heat ,loctite needs heat
 
Yeah but u have the ****ty ones the you have to drill a hole and then extract mine are like sockets and tighten as you undo. But your right. I have finally learnt if you can't do the job with the tools you have, wait until some1 has or buy the tools.
 
Nowt worked so removed head and took it to local engine specialist engineering company( JF Payne in Eynsham). They ended up drilling it out and inserting a wire thread insert. They said it was a nitemare to get out as was completely seized in!
 
Yeah its great thanks n soo good to hear that v8 singing again. God ive missed it. Cant wait till shes back on the road, then wallet permitting it will be full throttle everywhere!:D
 
Just adding my sixpence worth...

...Been using freeze and unlock stuff, quite a few varients around - halfords one works as well as any.

Idea it is effing cold when it comes out of can, which contracts the metal and as the two pices move at different rates a very thin penetrating oil gets in. I heard a few people say that is used to freeze bolt but its not the case, it is used to just move the components and getting oil.

Wicked stuff and works really well - highly recommend.
