Ive got a Sill panel coming from Paddocks for my series 3 88 1974. Im guessing it wont be Alluminum anymore and it will be steel? Am I right? Anyway, My question is, Are body panels usually coted in any protection paint etc and if not whats the right method of treatment before applying the top coat? Ive never done a panel before so thats why Im asking? Many many thanks as usual. :)

i would expect it to be aluminium, will most likely be bare, some parts i got had plastic wrap on so worth giving it a good clean before paint

Do you need etch primer before putting the top coat on to help it stick to the aluminium?

Yeah rub down with solvent to remove any machine/transport grease. Often panels and things like that are covered in a fine oil to keep them fresh. Then a coat of etch primer and a base primer. So dark colour finish = dark primer and light finish = light primer. Depends how you are painting. If spraying a few lighter coats is better than one heavy.

Oh Brilliant, I really didnt think it would be Alluminum these days! Wonderful news :):) Thanks for advice too will look up etch primer and where I can get it. Got an Autoparts on the Island so hopefully get some there! cheers
