This might sound a tad mad, but does anyone know if you can fit a BMW M57D30 into a '99 2.5DSE (manual)?

The M57 from the L322 is a different beast, common rail injection muliple pumps different ECU that would not talk to the BECM etc. I believe it has been done as has the fitting of the TdV6, expensive though. the M51 has plenty of grunt with a remap.

Maybe he's having trouble picking up a decent M51? They must all be getting a bit tired by now.

I have heard that remapping can cause damage to the engine in that it tends to over heat etc. Is that so?
No problems that I've heard of if the engine and cooling system is in good condition but they do tend to eat the ZF4HP22 auto box.

I have heard of an M57 in a P38... Search Goooooooogle for pictures sure i have seen it!

As mine is a manual it should not too much off a hassle then.

I have just come across the following:

"...DDE4 Short ecu loom
This loom enables the use of the M57 BMW engine easily in a engine conversion for the range rover P38
The M57/306D1 engine fits easily into a P38 2.5 diesel, but the wiring can be complicated this looms makes it plug and play.
For automatic gearbox cars you also need EL_1205 to make the gearbox ECU work correctly.
no working out the wire or if you need something or not, its all done with this loom.
It comes with all the connections needed to run the engine in any situtation,

Loom has connections for,

ECU x 2,

Throttle pedal,
EWS, and arial
OBD socket,
power connection,
body connection which has outputs for alternator, Oil light, RPM, and CAN-BUS..."

Would the whole thing need re-mapping with that engine?

Right then, after doing a tad of thinking (it hurt) what do you wise chaps think would be a better option: Swapping the engine or just getting my M51 remapped?

Then my question is, if it's remapping, where, how, which are to be trusted and, finally, the price of such?

(as an after thought, what are the opinions of the PSI Power Box?)

I'd go for a remap, is yours EGR or pre EGR? A Superchips re-mapped ECU would be a good bet.
Lot less hassle than an engine transplant and no conformity problems when you go for an MOT.

Think of that question in another way - would you like to spend a few hundred pounds or a few thousand?
