is that the one from an x5, i would recon it would fit but i would be surprised, if your tranmission line up, unless there made to a standard.

if you want a powerful TD engine for you LR go for a TDV6 or TDV8. it is much more likely to fit

Ive been toying with the idea of rebuild in a early defender latey and thought ive seen the engine advertised in LR mags ive never givin it much notice. Its this International 2.8L HS powerstroke, basicaly its a 2.8l tdi reworked 300TDI made by the same company that makes the old 300 motor in brasil (i think). I can't find much about it in price wise on uk sites, loads over seas though, but rough specs seem to be :

LR ‘300’ Tdi
Displacement :- 2,495 cc
Maximum power :- 111 bhp @ 4,000 rpm
Maximum governed rpm 4,000
Maximum torque :- 195 lbf ft @ 1,800 rpm

International HS 2.8L TGV (Variable Geometry Turbo)
Displacement :- 2,785 cc
Maximum power :- 135 bhp @ 3,800 rpm
Max governed rpm :- 4,000
Maximum torque :- 277 lbf ft @ 1,400 rpm

International HS 2.8L WG (Wastegate)
Displacement :- 2,785 cc
Maximum power :- 132 bhp @ 3,800 rpm
Max governed rpm :- 4,000
Maximum torque :- 262 lbf ft @ 1,600 rpm

If you have got the BMW motor then try to put it in, whats the worst that can happen? At least you can sell it if it doesnt fit. The motor above more than likely costs £££ big time once its in and sorted, but for me a decent 300 is good enough !

it stands to reason if you can fit a rover V8 in woth room to spare, but you may want to make some brackery to relocate the utenciels, like heat, fuel filter

I had an old 4 door ranget with a 2.5td BMW lump, lorry intercooler and a bit of reworking by Fearn, would happily spin all 4 wheels and was very very quick (for a landy), the install looked very simple and it had been mated to an R380 box so dont see fitting any of the range into a 90 should be that much trouble... the only prob with mine was it ate clutches a little readily and the ECU had been wired and fitted onto the inner wing so it was a bit vulnerable offf road with water n mud.

Cheers Steve

Land Rover conversions - M&D Engineering

they import the engine from belguim i think it is there only 2 mins up the road from me and its a very good engine alot better than the 300tdi but at 4,500 +vat its abit much and if you slap a bigger intercooler on a 300tdi and get some one who knows what there doing to play with the diesel pump you can get pretty much the same preofromance altho the more torque lower down the rev range would be nice but i aint going to pay 4grand 4 that shame if it was half that price i mite think about it

Of course they (LRSA) fitted the BMW M52 2.8i six-cylinder petrol engine in Defenders for a couple of years. Uses an R380 and the low-geared 1.6:1 Lt230. Goes like a bomb and is reliable. The 90 was a bit too fast IMHO.

sorry i didnt say, i'm contemplating buying a defender 90 but im put off by the performance! i like to get my foot down! i like the idea of a tdv8. would that be possible? a new gearbox would probably be needed to cope with that power and torque

i think the TDV migt be a little haevy and you will have to find a new radiator. also the torque might kill the drive train eventually.

also would the automatatic gear box take away the fun and technical skill of driving off road.

i can see why you couldnt fit a TDV6 and bolt it onto the end of a Def gear box.

fair enough, but you would surely brake the axel sooner or later and the exrtra wieght at the front. however i completely agree land rover sould make a V8 def again. pref diesel.

good question, no idea, why you gonna a get rear shunted disco, that'll be the only way to get a TDV6 (and later this year after a few range rover smash ups, a TDV8) with out loosing a right arm.

does anyone know if its possible to fit a 3.0d bmw engine, as in '02 l322 rangie, in to a 1990 defender 90?

cheers

I think you'll struggle with the amount of electronics on those engines, also the charging system probably will need uprating to cope with the extra power drain, dont the people who make the 300TDi engine do an uprated 2.8TDi version, might be worth looking into that rather than festooning your landie with control units bud
