To me thats just not worth it! Unless I can put my foot down in every gear it isnt really worth driving, as a standard Fender would probably out run you till you hit 4th...

Well it wouldn't be me, I cannot see that a BMW/Cummins powered Land Rover will do anything more than burn more fuel doing the same things a 200/300/TD5 would do... As for being able to accelerate faster in higher gear then OK great, you can thrash it down slip roads or along country lanes in 4th only to brake hard because it cannot corner at speed or it will slide off the road...

Dave, put the money towards a fast car and have the perfect combo!

Yeah as strange as it sounds Defenders only need 'reasonable' or 'sensible' power due to their older design. For me thats around ~350bhp and ~600nm max (may even be a bit much!). Power you can actually use in every gear without something going bang every 10 minutes, while being powerful enough to be genuinely quick, not just quick for a landy.

Theres a Belgian twin turbo 2.8 TD5 that runs about 750nm torque and destroys "unbreakable" shafts from Kam, got custom ones now but still cant use all its power.

All well and good having a super powerful Defender but pointless if it can be beaten on and off road by a standard 300tdi...

Already have a heavily modded E46 M3 so have that side of the combo sorted lol.

As for Cummins or M57 using more fuel. My TD5 struggles to get better than 27mpg and that's about 200bhp and still could do with more torque in higher gers expecially when towing.

People with cummins and one with 450bhp was telling me he gets about 30-32 overall from it!

RE: banks in the usable power in a Defender being about 350bhp and 600Nm. That's pretty much a standard 535d engine or maybe mild remap so engine is left completely unstressed.

Look what it'll cost to get a TD5 comfortably more than 200bhp and 450Nm. Your into headwork, massive turbos, maybe different cam etc and pray that it doesn't crack a head or melt a piston then

Thats decent then, otherwise it becomes a very expensive game with drive train upgrades etc...

However 200bhp & 450nm can be done for as little as £1.5k working well. I spent a tad more on mine as wanted higher quality parts. You can squeeze more maybe 250/500nm but the cost outweighs the gains really, cheaper to fit a better engine (i personally like the 3UZ FE V8)

Still got to actually dyno mine see what its really putting out, it certainly shifts

Yea mine has vnt, intercooler, alisport manifold, straight through exhaust, oversize pistons and slightly higher cr so close to 2.6 now, Alive map and usual bits but still wouldn't mind abit more really ad my 110 is both heavy as well as do a alot of towing.

If pushed a TD5 further, it would start to get a little risky if towing and heavy work for long periods I'd imagine due to being pretty highly strung

So looks like I'm doings this swap sooner than expected.

My TD5 is starting to get more blowby recently so days might be numbered. More than likely due to not having a great run in when I rebuilt it due to using injectors that were tested and told to be good weren't right at all and my headgasket went after 500 miles. The run in for the rings then suffered as a result I assume.

Im thinking, I might just go with a P38 bellhousing and modded TD5 R380 as the quickest and easiest way to get it in and running. Will only be going for about 230-240bhp max anyway with an early M57 i already have there to use.
Also have an new overdrive on my current Lt230 which I can still use to help with gearing. The M57 might kill it but that's what warrenty is for and can carry around a standard gear for the overdrive with me anyway as only 10 minutes to change if it does pop lol

I'll leave going mad in power for my fresh 130 build in time lol.

Least I'll recoup some costs by selling the TD5s vnt, alisport manifold etc too.

I done this conversion in 2012... Your issue will be overcoming the bmw electrical side. Emobiliser, abs sensors, limp mode etc.

Good luck mate.

Hey Glenn321 or anyone who has done this conversion.
Was it worth it? Does it give you the extra power over a modded 2.5 TDi
I’m looking into the same conversion but there are a number of options theses days.
Cheers
