If I were to get round to replacing the failed Bluetooth module in my 2007 FL2 would fitting a newer module allow me to stream music from my phone? Existing module only allowed me to make & receive phone calls.

No. No Freelander has the ability to stream music directly from phone to HU by BT.
I used a little plug in dongle, which plugged into a tiny USB adapter in the rear power socket, which had a small wire that went into the AUX socket right next to the power socket.
Like this.

Are you sure its broken and not something else which is causing it to fail? For instance the one on my car only works every now and then because whatever fault if causing my parking sensor to stop working (I suspect the towbar) was causing the module to intermittently fail

I'm not too sure how a tow module can effect the audio system, as they're not connected, other than to the CJB via parking module data link on the medium speed CAN bus.

I don't know either as I only dabble in nuclear physics at the weekend. All I know is when I have finished jacking the car up from the towbar stub I test drive the car and the parking sensors work and I can make mobile calls for a short time afterwards

It would be interesting to see how a tow module issue can cascade to the audio system. Very odd that one.

Is it the parking sensors sounding through the speakers, causing the problem now the tow bar is fitted? Just wondering and a guess. Does the radio still work.

Everything works on my FL2 'infotainment system' except Bluetooth, and I have a dealer fitted tow hitch. I doubt I'll get round to fixing it as
a) talking on the phone while driving is dangerous and
b) I can't be arsed

I think I may need to take a video because mine 100% does that and the next/prev controls on the steering wheel work with it. Shows the track "Now playing" too?

Maybe it's a 2012+ thing, I haven't done any witchcraft to make it happen. From the moment I paired with BT it's been able to use Bluetooth as an input as well as doing calls
