Hi, have been looking at similar threads for a while now, but was wondering if I could get a bit of further opinion,
I picked up a TD4 with 120k on the clock recently as a project. She was wrecked inside (been used as a van!) but I have managed to get most of the bits together, including some new seats, been hard work but not expensive (got the seats for a pound! ebaytastic!)
The bodywork is in sound order, and the clutch/gearbox is great (compared to my Td4 I had a few years ago it is brill, lovely and smooth)
I've got regulators on the way for the drivers window, and the rear, couldn't be fussed with the repair kits!
It needs a few odds and sods for an Mot, nothing too major,
However the one problem I have got is she is emitting blue smoke on cold, which is particularly prevalent (ie huge clouds of it!) at 2k rpm plus, once warm she is fine at all revs. The odd puff of black smoke if I floor it but no blue or white at all.
What I have done so far:
Synergy 2 fitted
Crankcase breather filter replaced, was absolutely caked - fitted toilet roll style filter (is there anything else I needed to do here, or should I have just bought a modded BMW vortex part?)
Intercooler elbow hose replaced
Millers diesel treatment added then full tank of shell (not v power) fuel.
Drove 80 miles on Mway since all that - but still seems the same.
On order - Rest of intercooler hoses, (ive found what seems to be a hole on the left hand side one?) Pierburgh MAF, EGR mod.
She is no prob to start, but I'm fearing the turbo has had it - and although I'm sure my "fixes" won't do any harm, I'll have to take the plunge and get it replaced. (Wasn't budgeting for a turbo damn!)
What are peoples thoughts on this and how much am I looking at labour wise for a turbo change? (think it may be beyond me!)
