Ok so my td4 2005 keeps blowing it's starter motor fuse f5 everyetime I turn the key to full ignition it will immediately blow the fuse, but if I start it from another cars battery it will start fine. Also if I drive for awhile it will start ok but the next morning it will blow again.
I've had it for two years and only recently I noticed that the fuse in the alternator slot was replaced with a 15amp when it should have been 10amp. Will this have killed my battery? And would a low battery be the probable cause for the starter blow out?.
 
what you could get for a 15amp fuse in stead of a 10 amp is a fire , take you starter motor off and inspect it . and if need be replace it as it should not be blowing fuses .
 
Ok cheers ill do it tomorrow morning, I'm actually sitting here now waiting for a jump I'm three mins from home lol, the car starts fine on a jump so I'll get it back and strip it down in the morning, plus I'm looking at the alternator I've a leaking hose and seems to be splashed with oil and soit

So your fuse is blowing because the link is in the position for your starter relay!! All current is coming through the fuse intended to only operate the relay!! Put a relay in and test it then. Also, have a good look over wiring for other fire hazards if the car has been 'electrically modified' !

Exactly. The starter relay coil fuse isn't supposed to drive the starter solenoid. :eek:

I don't know what's worse. It having a loop of wire, instead of a relay. Or the fact it's been blowing fuses and the loop has only just been noticed. :confused:
 
Why it starts on a jump is mystifying! Has the fuse blown at this point? If so other wiring mods must have occurrred!!

I'm thinking that the higher voltage of 2 batteries is pulling the starter solenoid over faster than the fuse can blow. The lower voltage of a single battery, is allowing the fuse just a few milliseconds longer for it to fail. It's all rather puzzling, in many ways.:confused:
 
Not all Freelander's have the same fuses and relays. Tis down to the spec.

But in his pic above int post in 4, his 150amp FL1 main fuse is either replaced with a bit of metal or upsidedown. Is that still fitted in a 2005 td4? (on me fone so can't open rave).

I popped mine year's ago when shorting the alternator positive terminal to the alternator case (as yer do) which is at earth potential. The fuse is as per mine int link below. It's a blob if hard coated plastic on a strip of metal. Not sure if it's only on one side of said metal or both. But worth checking.

And get yerself a 1kg dry powder fire extinguisher fer the boot. All Freelander's should have one but the OP's freelander needs it more than most. Yer never know wot the owner has done else where.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys, I replaced the battery and startert plus the relay in the end and all works fine, after a good check over its running well.
