Right you beautiful fonts of knowledge.....
Tonight on the way home from work my Td5 90 Decided it would play silly buggers!
This consisted of making a new noise for me. Almost an intermittent rub, in time with wheel revolutions. Did not stop when I dipped the clutch n free wheeled for a bit either, I guess that puts it "outside" an engine problem.
Next it started almost breaking for me, but it pulled/jerked to the right. Not loads but enough to get me down to 20 the rest of the 10 miles home!
I stopped off in a gravel pull off, jacked up n took the front driver's wheel off. This is when I noticed that the drive shaft and hub were quite hot. Compared this to the other side and it was a lot hotter.
Swivel bearing was cool and no leaks from there.
Next I rotated the hub and it would catch on occasion but not in any constant spots so disk ain't warped etc. what are we thinking guys? I NEED my Izabel working safely by Thursday really. Any ideas?

Thanks that seemed very decisive! Not even the slightest "I would say" or even "perhaps it could be" nope just three horrible words! Hahahahaaa. Guess I'm buying n fixing tomorrow then!

Worth taking it apart first, if one of the bearings has spun on the stub axle you may possibly need one of those to, I think the hub nut on a TD5 axle is also a single use item.
 
I'll just get the kit and do the lot in one go. I will do the passenger side at the same time then I can put the date in my "service book"
Thanks for the advice tho mate, my local garage (living in the sticks they do a few landys) said I could just be a sticking calliper/piston, so I'll strip that out at some point n give it a wd40 blast followed by a good grease up or even a stainless steel replacement!
 
Dont use wd40 or any mineral oil on calliper pistons as the seals get very upset, brake fluid is the way to go
 
Hopefully it is something as simple, however my thought is still the bearings, if it were the brake caliper sticking and getting everything hot I would have suspected that the brake on that side would have faded therefore wouldn't have been as efficient as the front left so you may then pull to the left when you brake. Also you said that it would rub at different place, I would have thought it would be the same place if it were the brake, however the rolling elements of the wheel bearings rotate at a different speed to the actual hub therefore aren't in the same place on each revolution. DONT use WD40 to try and free brake caliper components, it will cause the seals to expand and degrade then you will have seized and potentially leaking brakes, only use an approved brake cleaner or brake fluid for cleaning pistons.

Right wheel bearing change! Going for it after the dog walk. Looks pretty straight forward. Well a hell of a lot easier than the open heart surgery that is changing of injector washers the other month!

had the exact same issue. Bought a kit, took some time to do though as extracting the knackered one was hard work. plus if it has gone to that extent it might be worth ordering a new stub axel in case its damaged (The jerking to the right tells me this may be the case) as the failed bearing may have bitten into the stub. at £15 its worth having one as you don't want to pull it all apart not to be able to put it together again. Don't forget you'll need a 52mm Box spanner too.

Well I blogged a 52mm off my local mechanic for a pint. Stub axle and new bearing kits for all four being bought.
 
Well the box spanner started to split. Two 1/2" drive breaker bars are now knackered.......the hub nut is still there laughing at me!
Local LR-mechanic popped over just after tea time (he is a mate) had a go but still nothing. Even resorted to the gas lamp but still nothing. May have to drill n chisel it off in the morning!

Anybody any other ideas to get it off? It's a td5 so torqued upto 210nm. And now seized !

Yeah but "foreigners" are still frowned on. Bringing a socket home is ok but a full impact gun etc is perhaps a tad cheeky. Besides they would want to charge me......it's that kind of dealership garage lol

mechanics usually have there own tools
