Tried to get my Defender registered Austrian last week. All was fine exept the suspention lift, the snorkle, the front bumper, the light bar, the a-bar and spots, the head lights, the tyres, the wheels, the steering modificatons and oh, not forgeting the rear seats. they said it was a nice colour for the year though

its staying british. then i am going to buy every single last modification that is banned here. oh plus a good old papier machet 2 finger salute for the bonet

Same in Portugal.. any kind of modifications are banned..
specially in cars, you cant even put a spoiler or change the gear knob to a chrome one, or even change the pedals...
and bumpers and fibreglass kits thats a big no no...

also, if your car/4x4 comes from factory with say 215/65 R16...that's all you can use, the tyre size is in your V5 and you cant change it to any other size..

well, the reason why its like that in Portugal is to try and stop street racing...
thing is over there, boy racers dont convoy showing off their fibre kits like here...they actually race, just like you see in a fast and furious film...

so the way to try and stop it is banning all kind of modifications...
local DVLA even has a lorry with a rolling road....if your car is standard with 100bhp, goes in the lorry and shows 120...the car is impounded...

thats a bit severe isn't it.no mods of anykind.i thought all the cars i saw in portugal looked a bit bland.

yeh, very severe...

its ridiculous to be honest, because you can buy let's say a koni suspension specific for a car, which is TUV approved and EU approved and can be used in any other EU country...
but the clever peeps in "DVLA" Portugal think they know best and do not allow that kind of suspension...

you still see modified cars, but they are all illegal...
but... selling aftermarket parts is legal, of course it is, the government makes money of it, but installing them is illegal... and again, government makes money here from fines...

They street race here as well, But they are a lot more subtle about it, Anyone who lives in south end will probably have heard about a few spots. (miss spent youth spent wasting ££££ on front wheel drive hatcbacks )

Engine mods are also illegal in France, What i can never work out, is what is the difference between a mod and a replacement part? Surly swapping in a lighter car battery would lighten the car, increasing performance, there for making it a modification?
