Cant believe this has happened. Recently purchased a TD5 2003 Auto. Drove it home a treat and ran it about for two weeks. Collected a horse trailer and towed it up the motorway with no problems - faultless..... Then after parking the trailer the damm thing refused to change gear, dropped into 3rd and 'limped' home. M and S lights flashing as well as the LED light saying what gear it was in....I can hear you all saying xyz switch... Took it to a Landrover specialist who plugged it into the diagnostics machine - he too was convinced it was the switch, but it wasn't his next thought was some cable that wears inside the box but that too has been crossed off the list. The box is leaking oil like a sieve and took 4 litres. It appears the transfer box has been off and the wrong bolts have been used to but it back together.

Does anyone have any other ideas???? And as a last resort has anyone ever put a replacement box in a TD5 how long did it take and of course how much will one cost?

Beginning to wish I had taken the advice offered and brought a bloody Landcruiser:(

All suggestions really appreciated the damm thing cost me £6500 wished I had never seen it
 
if your faults where caused by leak rear auto box housing can easily be changed with transfer box removed ,i would probably have one ,there isnt anything in rear housing aprt from park brake and it dosent have to be disturbed if too long a bolt put in one of the holes lower passenger side it goes through case ,what colour of oil in box ,does it run okay with correct level
 
Hi there, the oil is clear.....It ran fine haven't driven the thing since it had the oil topped up but the mechanic said it was much better...Could the whole problem really be caused by a low oil level?
 
yes ,the one thing with autos you need to worry about is oil going blackish as it means clutch pack or packs burning out
 
has he tried clearing fault ,flat or low battery can make lights flash ,i have a spare xy switch if you need to try that
 
Did you buy it from a garage/dealer or was it private if you don't mind me asking? If its a garage or a dealer they are liable to fix it as it is 'not as described'
 
Well just to update everyone on here, Moneypit is now at Derbyshire Landrover and they have discovered she needs a new gearbox, old one leaking oil like a sieve, a new xyz switch - even though the first garage said there was nothing wrong with the existing one and finally a transfer box.... total bill over £1700 in parts and thats before they add labour and of course the dreaded VAT.
Bang goes my holiday this summer and thank goodness they take plastic, but on the positive side it should be ready next week and I can drive it..:D
Moral of this story - take someone who knows what they are looking for when buying a TD5 and dont asume just cos its quite new there wont be anything wrong with it
 
iam allways surprised when both boxes are needed,unless on a truck thats very high miler thats completely worn out
 
Its got 111k on the clock but has been green laned - not that they told me that when I brought it but the ton of mud on top of the diff gave it away.
