After i fitted my new exhaust at the weekend i thought i would take a look at the old cat, so i cut it open with a grinder. What a state it was in,its almost completely blocked with soot so theres no wonder the car was so slow before.I wonder if this causes enough back pressure to blow a head gasket if left long enough?. Just thinking aloud.

that was the thinking when i smashed the honeycomb cat out of the linkpipe on me bike,,, honest officer:D

Please tell me you wore a mask whilst cutting the cat out to have a look.

The exhaust cat is extremely toxic and shouldnt be messed with.

Slap a decat pipe on, they are around £30-40. if its pre 2001 car then there is only a single lambda sensor, so straight swap.

If post 2001 the second lambda sensor downstream of the cat will casue probs:

Solution: hang the sensor in fresh air around the outside of the exhaust, this fools it into thinking it is reading exhaust gases.

You will need some sort of cat for your MOT though, look for Mike Satur MG website, he sells SS cat saver nuts and you can change them easily before the MOT.

You can repress the cat gaskets to be re-used

bigshane, I see what your mode of thinking is there, but I can't see how the exhaust system would cause a head gasket blowout. My personal feeling on the HGF problem is that this is cooling, more properly - coolant system - related.

I could be wrong...

I'll talk out me arse here, but wouldn't back pressure on't outflow of gases reduce engine efficiency and increase running temps? certainly a freeflow zorst and a freeflow filter is often the quickest and cheapest addon to increase hp....

Mind, i'm known for talking bollox a lot.............:p
