got the engine up to temp last night, temp sensor reading 90c but the expansion tank was cold and the coolant at the top of the 'stat was about 60c with IR thermometer
me thinks theres a blockage somewhere
 
RAVE says you know the 'stat opens when the top hose gets hot.
Mine gets hot well before the thermostat opens, so does that mean I must have a problem/blockage? Or is RAVE not right about this

when thermostats were housed just before top hose top hose would get hot when thermostat opened allowing coolant to pass through,thermostats are now often housed at botttom hose end o top hose can get hot eventhough there no flow through rad
 
filling expansion tank,when it runs, gems 4.6 1996,i fill up ,let it run till water is warm with cap off, fill 2 litre coke bottle with water and invert into expansion tank,you will get air bubbles untill water is forced in and full,when no more air bubles ,take off coke botle,and siphon off excess water ,so it is right level ,screw on cap,heat up engine,leave overnight check level next day.the coke bottle will stay there inverted on its own,okay you will spill some water,but hey ho a way you go.you dont leave coke bottle their overnight ,found this online,could be on this sight?you do this at your own risk,always works for me,when i ca start the ------thing,thanks
 
Rapidly squeezing and releasing the hoses with the engine running and cap off will also help expel air
That's what I've been doing. Leave the cap off for an hour while i have dinner seems to help also, the coolant slowly seeps thru
 
I park mine on an angle with one front corner pointing up.

An hr :eek: This sounds more than bit of air still stuck in there I must be honest :(

I only said an hour because it gives you time to sit and forget while you do something else! might only take 5 mins.. never watched it!
 
+1 on squeezing hoses while it warms up to help move the air-locks, although do this with cap on expansion tank to ensure you're moving air around, rather than just expelling air from tank.

Did you blow the water out of the radiator bleed hose ? Definitely helps, and many folks skip this step !!

Last time I did mine, I used vacuum pump on the bleed hose to help fill the system before starting the engine - you get lots more initial coolant in the system this way.
Then keep applying vacuum while the engine warms up until you get coolant out of the bleed hose. At this point re-connect it to expansion tank and the system should self bleed.
