Hi I ma redoing my entire series 3 brake pipe system. However the bleed nipples and pipes attaching to the brake drums are seased. I have tried WD-40 I am wondering if anyone knows of any other way of loosening these. I was wondering whether the application of heat would do it but am not sure whether it would damage the threads.

You might find that if you mig weld a nut on to the top of the nipple they usually come out easily enough,

combination of good grip from the new nut and a bit of local heat from the mig works every time for me, without damaging the thread

That is if you have a mig of course.
good luck!

I wouldn’t bother trying to save them.

Drill / cut them out and fit new cylinders they are cheep (£5 to £6).

a bit of heat from yer blow torch should do the trick, of course you do have the option of spending about 30-40 quid on new cylinders. if you chose the heat approach then you will have 30quid spare to buy me a beer

Get er nice and hot like Slob said and once its nice and hot touch a wax candle to it and the heat will pull the wax into the threads and in most cases it will come free.

Good luck

Definetly "HEAT", if you do not have MIG, you can buy for few GBP probably in any better tool shop, small "Camping gas blow HEATER" & and you will alway's have it with you....

There will be more thing's what you can "unscrew"... (you British even do not know how you are LUCKY, have landy's and INCH tool's for him)

HERE TO FIND "INCH 5/8 or 3/8 or other " tool's you must be a very lucky guy or Maharadza to buy :D :D :D

brada;; we have a thing called the internet where one can buy 5/8Af or 3/8AF tools, one can also buy 'hoss spanners" or as they is sometimes called 1/2 whit

Tried this the other week and the nipples we stuck too. One nipple sheared off when trying to undo it, so we just replaced the cylinders (and piping at the same time). At £8 a cylinder, it's a lot easier to buy new than mess about with with seized parts, which in my case are 31 years old. I also have the knowledge that the parts on the vehicle are likely to last another 30 years ;)

its all a matter of how stuck they are. i've unstuck nipples and other parts at the cost of a few pence and a few minutes of time. against the cost of new parts and the time taken to get them. so i'd say its better to try to fix before spending yer hard earned on new bits you don't need...if a valve on a wheel is leaking do you rush out and buy all new wheels and tyres?
i hope you don't read the thread about the bloke with the rounded drain plug on his axle, you'll be sending him orf to buy a new axle and springs

It's a question of costs

I suggested new cylinders for a couples of reasons
1 They are cheep, ok not 5 to 6 £ but not all that much with a
bit of looking.

2. This is a safety critical part and if you have a single system
(lose one loos the lot) like me, you don't want to F***
around with abused parts.

Regards
Clivees

Ps
I'm also the guy with the stuck filler nut and i will be taking
all the advice i can get on that, because as you suggested
that does cost dosh to replace.

PPs
No prob on the beer or several "Slob" if i
ever run in to you at one of the rally's:)

Think there's a bit of a difference between an 8 quid new cylinder (or even 16 if you need both) than the cost of a whole axle, but if you are that hard up then I can see why you'd want someone else to buy your beer! :D

I was just stating the route I'd taken, as for me, getting the jobs done quickly is more important than at lowest possible cost. If your situation is different, then feel free to ignore what I said and take the longer but cheaper route.

are you saying its quicker to replace six cylinders and renew the pipes because the terminals rounded off that it is to heat up a bleed nipple?
and cheapness has got **** all to do with it . i'd rather use me grey matter and repair something than sit throwing money at it for no reason...
bleed nippled siezed, solution ..free off nipple.
it has to be quicker than renewing all yer brake cylinders and pipework. but what do i know i'm poverty stricken? i've even used the same engine block when i rebuilt the engine.

oh! dear slob old mate , i'm ever so sorry to hear about your financial hardships. perhaps i could put a collection tin in my salon for you? or could we at landyzone have a slob-o-thon to raise money for you . i'd hate to think of you having to go back to work. i could give you work sweeping up hair in my salon if you like.
i see now why you only have 4 cars and a house set in only 2 acres.
come on landy folks lets help him out here
slob needs money now!! lets not let him down

can i also suggest that perhaps a red cross drop of essential supplies be flown in. beer, dope and those female things called women. start collecting at you local supermarket today.

Now Now children play nicely or I will tell your moms and they may take your toys away.:D

I didn’t mean to suggest that any one goes around and replace all the cylinders.
But it occurs to me that if you heat up a part of the cylinder there is a risk of boiling the fluid (dependent on which dot you have) and or damaging the rubber cylinder seals.

Clivees

so yule heat up a bit of fluid, fluid that you is just about to pump out during bleeding. as for melting the rubber seals you'd have to a bit thick to get the cylinder hot enough to do that and not realise. its been done this way for years and probably will be for years to come, or are you really afraid that they is made from the same rubber as the bushes and don't want one going orf in yer face?

I never said rounded off, I said sheared off..the bleed nipple was no longer on the cylinder, and once that happens you're pretty much going to have to remove the cylinder, so might as well replace it.

And not sure about your Landy (does it have twins on the front ?), but mine only has four cylinders, so no I don't need to ever do 6.

It took us about 2-3 hours to replace the rear cylinders and pipe work, so I wouldn't say that was a huge job, and nor was it that expensive either.

Oh and since you like to twist what people say to an extreme...what buy a blow lamp to heat up a nipple when you can rub two sticks together with tinder to make a fire??? ;)

the original originator of the thread stated his nipples and pipes were stuck. so maybe instead of trying to be sarcastic with yer two bit of wood thing, your time would be better spent reading the original post on the thread. which clearly does not state anything about busted nipples. if your nipples are busted then that is a different matter. ... now where was i ..

Erm you were the one who responded to my reply to the original poster, maybe you should have read my post, and perhaps you would see why I suggested what I did.

Anyway this isn't helping anyone so I'm not going to say anymore on the subject.

Oh and btw you have a lot of gall fella picking up on my sarcasm, I'm not the one who suggested swapping a whole a whole axle etc. If you can dish it out, you ought to be able to take it.
