I've been looking around online and lots of people recommend removing the EGR for better fuel economy, performance etc..

After a poke round my car, its got me thinking if its actually worth doing? Nothing wrong with the motor at the moment. Would it perhaps pre-empt any future problems?

Car is a '96 300Tdi Disco :)

Thanks for any input!

Did mine soon after purchase, despite being virginal Land Rover owner. Now have a Landie that goes up hills better, tows better, and generally is better all round. Can not attest to better fuel consumption, but have had no problems with the motor or MOT's. My suggestion is to blank the egr off in such a way as you can go back if you want. Though I am sure that you will notice an increase in 'get up and go'.

It's definatly worth it because the exhaust gas just clogs up the engine with crap.
My advice is get it blanked then take out your intercooler and clean it then take off your inlet manifold and get all the crud out of there too. Trust me it will have a good layer of black sludge!
While your at it put a straight through down-pipe on as well that will let the engine breath easily.
Then you could go down the route of tweaking your fuel pump for even more power!:D

As Robbh says it clogs up your engine with loads of black crud so you will be doing it a big favour when you blank it off! Its not a difficult job nor does it take long and is reversible should you ever decide to go back.It also has no effect on your emissions for the mot and if anything i would have thought it would lower them so its a no brainer and win win job.
