Never tried it in any other mode other than standard so far, but will give it a try. Couldn't say if its ever been remapped or not. All the pipes I removed, even when I checked the egr were covered in oil. I have cleaned the egr. I can still hear the whooshing sound as I said when I hit the accelerator hard. But not sure where else to check, as I said it seems more prominent down at the drivers side. This may just be turbo kicking in? When you say waste gate, is that the egr as that was moving freely?

I thought I should update this just to give people some info. All the usual things have been tried. Hoses, intercooler, turbo, egr, maf, pressure tested. Even did a Terraclean. Eventually it was discovered that someone had done the timing belt and not put the timing back to exact position. So at that stage and after £2500 on it by dealer we decided to stop, cut out loses and return car to them. So I'm now the proud owner of another Freelander 2 minus the black smoke.

Hi
I have exactly the same problem, I have been through some easy checks oil and filter change, air filter and hoses. It is a freelander 2 with 76k on it. I did have remap 5k ago but it has only just started snoking and much worse ehen towing.

Any thoughts very welcome

Just wondering if u got the black smoke sorted on the fl2? I have same problems with my fl2 (08 & hi mileage). Blocked off egr valve & that's when the black smoke started. Prior to that the engine started hesitating badly when I tried to gun the engine. After I disconnected the maf sensor plug it drove as if in limp mode but took ages to get up to speed (hence blocking egr valve )

The throttle plate has probably stuck half closed.

hi.this may have nothing to do with your problem .but the black smoke from mine was due to the front airbox screws being loose due to threads being stripped so lid was lifting on accelleration. so dragging too much air in.might help might not .I shall now shut up.

I think my black smoke has to do with the air flow meter. It only occur's when we plug it back in & that's when the black smoke happen's. Here we go again.

Unplugging the MAF will disable the EGR system, of which the throttle plate is used. My guess it the plate is sticking shut. It's a common problem on lots of later diesel engine.s

Hi Nodge. We're going to check that tomorrow b4 I go ordering air mass flow plug thingy. Thanks again & I'll keep u posted.

Everything turned out to be a hole in the turbo pipe (which was missed when someone checked them). However, when I gun it at junctions etc she hesitates for a second b4 going (dangerous when trying to get across the A11 at roundabout). She also went into limp mode on Thursday when traveling to work (after gunning her to pass a few lorries). 3 hrs later Rac turned up & reset a lot of error's on his diagnostic's. Really nervous now when driving as Rac couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen again & even followed me 30miles home just in case. I'll post diagnostic results later & hopefully someone can pass on their opinion's. Thanks those who took the time to help me.

If you block or remove EGR you should clean the inlet manifold and intercooler as well ...

We unblocked the egr valve when we realised the new air mass sensor didn't make any difference. We kept the new mas sensor plugged in tho. Funny enough the diagnostic said something about air intake & hot air errors.

The gunge that blocked the EGR can give some serious choking to the intakes and breathing ... intercooler is best cleaned with oven cleaner or paraffin soakings, make sure it's proper dry before refitting tho ...
