Got my wife to tow me back today with the td5.only pulling a berlingo 1.9d but the black smoke from the discos tail pipes was a fair bit.its running with egr deleted, middle box removed, large alisport intercooler.and a dastek power chip.2002, 15p, manual gearbox.recent new maf.any thoughts please.

Too much diesel or not enough air.

Overfuelling as mentioned or the turbo is shot. collapsed pipe on the suction side of the turbo etc etc.

put your nanocom to work and record some live data, concentrate on the AAP and IAT readings... see injector balance too, cos black smoke can be from injectors too

Ok so been 50 mile round trip.aap started 100.04 then dropped 98.60 then fluctuated between 101.50 down to 99.60 at 70mph.is it supposed to drop as you go faster.intake air temp 27.8.engine temp was 84.

the fact that the AAP drops on acceleration means that it's a restriction in air flow as the engine "sucks" more air than it gets creating a depression in the airbox...put a new quality air filter and make sure that the air intake duct is not clogged or something, also if you dont remember when you changed it put a new depression controll valve too

what you named intake air temp must be the inlet air temp read by the IAT sensor which is combined with MAP in the same body and it seems normal to me

How much does it smoke and when ?. A chugg of smoke will be normal on a remapped TD5 just before it comes on boost.
My TD5 used to black smoke quite heavily on boost, ( especially when cold ), and this was down to a poor remap.
