its a manual gearbox only happens in 3rd its just when i gun it to get up to speed on dual carageways 1st and second fineI'm not sure if you have manual or auto (can't remember reading it mentioned), if you force the vehicle to stay in a low gear (first or second) and give it the beans does it still blow smoke?
On older dervs a bit of smoke was to be expected, especially when the turbo comes on song. Usually it is just unspent fuel. Can you recreate the smoke plumage if for example you're in a gentle cruse at 30 drop a cog or two and nail it? NO If so does it continue for long after you get off the throttle or stop almost immediately? It should blow clear in about 1-2 seconds after you release the throttle.

took the air filter out to see if it made a differenceStrange its only in one gear.
Has the air filter been changed recently
