looking for advice please when I go into 3rd gear whilst trying to accelerate quickly when getting out quick at junctions I get a cloud of black smoke it does clear after a few seconds when the revs drop and hit 4th gear

Black smoke is over fueling.
I believe.
Has it been chipped Or fuel pump advanced?
But remember no smoke no poke;)

Clogged Intercooler and/or can give a good dose of Black smoke on hard acceleration!!

I can floor it in any gear on mine and there is no smoke, it's got plenty of poke.
Petrol or diesel and what year?

1995 diesel 2.5 not chipped as far as i know engine is standard
Ok it's an early one without the MAF, fueling was a tad less accurate. If the engine has not been worked/revved for a while you may get a bit of smoke on hard acceleration. If it always does it even after a decent run at speed, I'd be inclined to think worn injectors if the mileage is high.

I take this is a diesel. Black smoke on acceleration can be caused by a couple of things. Lack of oxygenated air caused by a restricted intercooler or the EGR valve opening on acceleration, which it should not do, allowing exhaust gas to reduce the charge oxygen content. Or the EGR valve not closing properly due to build up of deposits around it's seat or a weak or broken spring within it.

Data if it were injectors I'd think there would be idel problems and it would smoke a lot all the time . Not just 3 to 4th or what ever it was
