Mine would pump out enough black smoke to be visible in the rear view mirror when under stress from my right foot. I considered it normal. But i've noticed that it has reduced since changing a U/S thermostat, my temp gauge very rarely entered the normal zone hovered around the blue area

Presumably the ECU was fueling as if the engine was cold, ie rich which equals black smoke on a diesel. If you want to see real black diesel smoke, go to a tractor pulling contest
