I find that if theres no diesel in the tank the smoke isnt an issue, so i fill up after ive started the engine.

my 90 smokes on start and even still smokes alittle on full boost so did my disco 300tdi and my old td 19j engine smoked more than a dot cotton

black mark on my wall where I park says its normal

Black mark on the missus's SLK when I start up in the mornings.
Black mark on my copy book if I don't clean it for her.
I have to tell passengers to stay well away from the exhaust when I'm reversing out the gates before they clamber aboard. :D

do they, mines a 200 and ive only owned it for a couple of wks, im sure it didnt do it when i bought it but maybe im just conscience of it now

cheers
I had the same fears when I first got mine. There is a thread on here some where from me. I have a 200tdi. Its normal for it to put out a puff of black smoke on start up. I was told it was due to the injectors pumping in neat Diesel as a sort of choke on start up. I have had mine for four years now and its still the same.
All part of the joys of owning a 200tdi.

my 19j used to fire up like a london smog after 30 seconds of cranking. when we had the snow there was a big oil slick next to where the exhaust pipe was. put a 200tdi in now which gives the normal puff of smoke on start up nothing to worry about there
