I drove the car today and the situation repeated - black and white smoke (from unburnt fuel) and runs weird when accelerated while not in gear, but when the car warms up, everything seems to be normal (although still smokes a little bit when driving). Could it be that the car needs some time to adjust to the new airflow? or maybe there is something wrong with the engine itself?
also the exhaust fumes smell like the fumes from very old lorrys, but i guess it's not much of a clue
 
I just replied to another post on td5 smoke, saying there was a recent post where a guy had running/smoke issues, and that was down to incorrect timing, ie the chain was set wrong.
 
Thank you, i will look into that. Tomorrow I will remove the rocker cover and look there again, maybe this time i will find something, but i have to admit that i'm slowly losing hope for this engine.
 
Timing chain, camshaft, rockers and everything else under the rocker cover looks great, but to say that car runs badly would be a compliment. I will start looking for new(used) injectors or new engine, since new engine is 4 times cheaper than rebuilding the old one.

Can you not get one in the uk and ship it home? there are always Polish registered vehicles over here, trucks and loads of vans some with trailers.

I was thinking about that, but I can buy an engine here in Poland for around 600 pounds, so in the end I wouldn't save that much money by shipping it from the UK. The problem is that no one in my city or even nearby wants to work on Land Rovers.

Here is the situation now, in short:
-Car starts without any problems or smoke
-when i rev it while cold and in neutral it emits white, thick and smelly smoke, which i'm almost certain is unburnt diesel and runs on 4 cylidners
-when driving while cold it produces black smoke on accelerating and white when the rpms drop
-when the engine is warm, there is no visible smoke (or at least not so much that i can see it in the mirror)
- there is a noise that i think is diesel knock, but im not 100% sure
-when warm, the car has a lot of power, and accelerates like a rocket
-the fuel pump is loud as hell, but always have been

Before i buy a new engine I will connect it to the computer and check injectors once again, and then maybe change the injector seals.
I was thinking about checking compression, but my mechanic said that if it had poor compression it wouldn't start that easily, is that true?
 
Maybe get a handheld laser themometer, run engine and measure exhaust manifold temeperatures at different rpms, if one is obviously colder this is the weak cylinder, then swap injectors (doing seals at the same time) and see if the fault moves with the injector, if so the injector is at fault, if not the cylinder is at fault.

I notice in the UK almost without exception most Polish people run gerrman cars of one make or another.
Exception being my two neighbours who seem to like Diahatsus for some reason!

Yeah, we are really passionate about boring cars, here in Poland it's really difficult to spot any interesting car, mostly old German cars or Skodas : D

I do not think it is about boring, it is about reliablity and getting people to work on what they know.

Priming should not make any difference, if it starts and runs easily on the first turn of the key, then you can discount that side of things.
I can remember reading something years ago about TD5s and porous fuel filter heads, might be worth a google?
 
I connected the car to the computer again to check a few things, here is some of the things i found:
-injector balance/correction is still 0 when cold and idling, and jumps to around 20 when at around 1500 when cold and in neutral, but is isn't very surprising, since it works on 4 cylinders then
- Delphi computer shows "intake air temperature - 120*C" and it doesn't change when sensors are disconnected, however, I couldn't find it when connected to nanocom
I also removed glowpug on the number 1 cylinder and it looks great, there is no fuel/oil/carbon at all

tomorrow i will check rest of the plugs and i think i will replace injectors washers. I have a theory that the washers are slightly worn and some of the pressure gets into the fuel line (is this a correct term?) and it messes with the amount of fuel injectors get, kinda far fetched, but makes sense to me : D
 
I have a brand new sensor somewhere, i will install it and see what happens, although it a little wierd, because the reading didn't change when i disconnected the old one.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that i sometimes get error related to the accelerator pedal (driver demand something, i will check tomorrow if it reapeared) but i have no clue if it is relevant to this situation
 
Good evening!

Today I removed all the injectors and checked copper washers and the results are not very clear. There is no indication of leak of any kind on the washers, but there is some kind of brown marks on the injectors and the hole where injectors sit (you can see it on the picture, but it is even more visible in person). there is also some carbon residue on the outside diameter of the hole where the washer is located.
There was also some residue on the tip of the injectors visible on the attached picture, is it acceptable? all of them looked basically the same. Maybe i could soak tips of the injectors in something before i put them back? also, should i apply some kind of lubricant on the injectors before putting them back in the engine?
I still have hope, that my theory about fumes entering fuel is true. I will try to put the engine back together this week.

Any news on your problem? I have quite similar issue, low power and black smoke under 2000rpm (except that the car runs great) but could not find the root cause yet.
My car remapped, no error code, all nanocom parameters seems to be ok.

Some remaps delete error codes as they happen, so may need it demapped to get codes read.
