hi folks,my defender is 7yrs old,it started throwing out black smoke when i accelerated to join a by pass,the worrying thing was i lost power almost straight away and it didnt respond to the accelerator till i dropped down a gear and i noticed that there was clouds of black smoke,ive taken it in to my local landrover garage and they found 3 of the 4 injectors had melted,now two weeks later its starting again any ideas whats going on, many regards too you all,smokie
 
Welcome to the forum, might be worth asking in the defender section giving details of which engine type and mileage. I take it that they replaced the injectors?
 
Well there'll be a sensor that's causing the tuning to be miles out so the injectors melting are almost certainly a result, not the cause. I'd be looking at Lambdas, MAFs, etc. first and guessing that whatever is wrong is overfuelling the engine. Try a better LR specialist!

where i take my landy is a specialist all they do is fix landys,its had in the last few months 2 egr valves as the first gave up the ghost,now this,im getting depressed now
 
Hate to say it but if they're a specialist and you're burning through egr's and injectors I'd be looking for a more specialist specialist!

Has it been tuned in it's past life?

yes they did,the mileage is 73698,and the engine is 2402,it went great then its started again,thanks marmaduke

as far as i know its not,as it had only done 28k when i brought it,as for the specialist ?? thats what im thinking but dreading the bill the new injectors has cost me 800 quid, thanks muddy
 
I'd want to plug it in to a computer and make sure it hasn't been tuned. Then check the workings of the sensors controlling the fuelling first (lambda,MAF, etc.), make sure there's no blockage on the air supply side, injectors are correctly sized, etc.

A good diagnostic specialist should be able to check that all the sensors are working correctly and that the injectors are being pulsed for the correct frequency. Given the relatively low mileage for the age, I think unfortunately you may have just cause for being concerned about the upcoming bill. Good luck, I think you're going to need it.

thanks muddy, what kind of money would this all cost any ideas
 
I'd hate to guess Smokie, sorry. It sounds like the type of problem you could be chasing for some time fixing one thing, then another, then another, etc. If you can find the root problem and fix that first you may get away with less than a couple of thousand (assuming you're going to need new injectors again), but I've a feeling you're going to be paying a lot on labour trying to get a garage to chase the problem through unless you know someone who has the diagnostic kit for your vehicle that can be paid with beer.

hopefully muddy,i wont need to pay for another set of injectors as surly they should of worked out why the things had burnt out in the first place,
 
Yes, I agree that they should have. Does that mean you think you've found an honest garage who will not charge you for work that doesn't need doing?! I hope you're right but have the feeling their paperwork will have a clause that allows them to get out of it.

i hope so when the egr valve went they replaced it ,no cost as it was faulty so they said,which was ok,its just the going backwards and forwards to the garage
