Im ready top sell my series 3. it no longer gets used, the kids have grown up so fun days out arent the same, also being nagged by the wife at having too many vehicles already and i need to get another van for business. the others are essential for work etc.
My Argument "I have room for more.. why must i sell it?" just isnt working.

So i can either chuck it on the market as it is of do some work to make it more sale-able.

The down side here of course is it could cost more to do than it would improve in value.

everything is still original, apart from the two diffs which i swapped for 72 range rover diffs so it wasnt so annoyingly slow.
the front seats had an upgrade and i have added an inline fan for the heater as the original was not working. also has a diesel heater button rather than it being on the ignition.

i did mot it last year even though it was exempt, this expired Jan 2019 but i havent mot'd it since. its registered as a Historic Vehicle & HVI so exempt from MOT's but i could still get one if i wanted.
Adviseries on mot were some cracking to tyres and play in the prop shaft which will still be the same.
the milage at the last mot was 54,873. it is currently at 54,916 (under 50 miles in a years). as you can see, it isnt being used as it should.

im looking for advice really, im told by mates that i should paint it, get a new rag top and new wheels and ask a decent amount.
im told by other mates that in its original condition it might be more desirable to some one who wants an easy project.

I did get original paint (still have it). but i likes the way it looked when it came out of the Barn 10 years ago. paint worn off by animals rubbing against it etc. the whole look tells a story.

it starts always after a few turns and pressing the heater button. drives fine... well it drives like a bumpy smokey old lady but still fun.

either way, i have no idea of a fair value for the land rover and could do with a heads up on this too.
what would be a fair value these days?
should i do some work on it?
should i mot it or just take advantage of it exemption?
is there a better place to sell it than ebay?

thanks for any advice.

Seconded, but I think on balance (its a fine balance) I would paint it. Its too many colours, I think it would look a lot better one colour. I would black waxoil underneath as this looks nice in the photos and shows you care...I'd also spend a few hours wiping an oily rag all round the engine and engine bay.

I doubt getting a new tilt would make any difference without a paint job, how rusty are the bulkhead and chassis?

is it just the standard 2.286 diesel? surprised that can cope with range rover diffs

Hi.
Selling the wife... best not eh!

Bulk head. Chassis ect are fine. Leaf springs are pretty rusty.
it is the standard diesel and the diffs are no problem at all. Initially there seemed little point in first gear as the ratio is so low and top spead was 45mph, But now 1st gear is like it should be and to spead is 55. similar to having an overdrive without the fuss.
I did red lead and undercoat everything. But another going over wouldn't be a problem.

I think the advice on cleaning it up. Oiling it all and painting one colour may be the way to go. I do have the paint.
I also have the tilt frame with a worn out tilt I can just chuck in with the sale or maybe get another.
Ill start on it this week and then get some advice on painting it with a roller.

I think its a tough call. I looked at the various series on e-bay and this one is between the two, its not a "barn find" and while it needs some work it actually quite a decent vehile. That's my reasoning to advice smartening it up a bit and shifiing it a bit up market.

I would sell the frame and tilt separately to the land rover. On their own they are likely worth about £500ish if complete, especially this time of year, but they will not add that much in value when selling the vehicle. If you fit the tilt the hard top is worthless apart from the cat-flap.
I would definitely give it a quick paint, including touching up the wheels and good clean under bonnet and inside if you already have the peint that will only cost you time and will make it easier to sell with a wider appeal. I would be less worried about waxoiling the chassis if it is good. To me fresh waxoil/underseal is a marker you are trying to hide something when selling a vehicle

Paint it, tidy it up and put it on eBay starting price 99p, put a reserve on it if you don't want to give it away. EBay will find what someone is willing to pay for it. Or post another few posts and you can advertise it on this forum...

Decided to tidy it up.
Started already. Seen a couple of pics on line I fancy.
I have a choice of hard top sides (with or without windows).
Which do you think look better?
Also
I've notice mine has wing mirrors on the wings which doesn't seem the norm for series 3. I'm assuming only the earliest versions have this?
Many thanks

Without windows is a more classic look, but not as good if you want passengers in the back. If you are selling I would go for plain but that is me.

I would not worry about the wing mirrors, they will not make a difference to the sale.

Mine has mirrors on the doors and the wings, I think the wing ones are the type that flip out for towing a caravan.

I bought the glazed sides when I was using it to shunt the darts team about using it as a 7 seater. Thought it would be nice if they could see. Or more that they could be seen because when ever we stopped at a traffic lights or zebra crossing they would all pretend to be animals.. sheep and cows noises. What on earth people thought I might be carrying I don't know?
I'll scrub the tilt up and waterproof it and add it as an option .. or if I get a reasonable amount include it.
Like a carrot (a dusty discoloured carrot.. a Parsnip maybe) .

good call, hadn't occurred to me, certainly the better way to do it, agree hard top on its own is worth next to nowt

Some updated photos.

The new look has made me more popular when im out. Other landy owners flash me now and random people come over to chat about landys in general.
So. Been busy cleaning sanding priming ect. Greased all the nipples. topped up oils and cleaned her up.
I've still got to paint the lid. Or at least the cat flap. But I'm still not clear on the value of a 72 s111 like this.
I'm not after top dollar. But obviously don't want to lose out too much.
I was hoping to get 3k+.
Is this being realistic ?
I could keep spending on her (new tyres). But it would have to be reflected in the price.
Updated pics attached.
Many thanks

put it on eBay starting price 99p
Tried this with a motorhome once. Last bid was 2.5k way under value. The guy didn't turn up (thank goodness).
I sold it privately for 7.5k
Maybe if i had raised the staring price instead of 99p? Anyway it scared the he'll out of me.

That looks much nicer, a big improvment. I would think 3K is realistic as it tax exempt. Jet wash the engine.

That’s looking a lot better, good work.

Carry on like that and your wife won’t let you sell it:D if your lucky
