Tried to bump start my SWB 1971 ser 3, lifted the clutch and had a bit of a bang, now only have drive in low and High 4 wheel drive.

Rear Prop is spinning but back wheels aren't….

Would I be correct in thinking a half shaft or are there any more likely causes???

Wonder what I’m doing next weekend????

Thanks Andy

^^^^ Plus 1 on the half shaft, you will most likely have to pull the diff out to get the broken bit out. Be careful they are heavy.

I was just looking at that,,,, best make sure my head is under it to save any damage should it drop !

On a more serious note if I remove the caps will I be able to see how many splines it has? and are ser2 shafts the same as ser3, its a normal land rover axal if that matters?

Thanks for thr help and advice

Andy

Late series 3 are different 25 spline at outside edge with circlip instead of nut if drink has not affected my memory at this time of night.

I think I have the crown nut with a split pin..... so does that make it ser 2 10 spline??
too early for this thinking stuff

you could have broken something else so pull them 1st.
just undo the bolts around hub and pull shaft with hub end plate to inspect 20 mins each side.

Silly Question but do i need to jack each side up to save loosing loads of EP90 when I pull the shaft ????

(rather ask now than find out the hard way) LOL

Thanks Andy

Drain the diff - you'll have to ditch the oil and wash it all out anyway as the broken end of the shaft has probably filled the diff with swarf and it's likely it'll have to come out to remove the inner bit of the shaft. The oil from the hubs should drain into the diff case although there's bound to be a llttle spillage.

evening all... well its taken a while but i had a look and the off side shaft is a bit shorter then it should be :-(

Question.... If I pull both half shafts what's the chances of pushing the broken end out from the other side ( i have a long stick that should be long enough)

Thanks Andy

A stick won't do it, the axle rod of the diff bevel gears is in the way. A thin rod may push the stub out of diff but the stub will will drop into the pan anyway so it's diff out.

Whats that word im looking for???? I yer B#####R :5bbanghead:

Mind you if i try to hold it with a telescopic magnet from one side and push from the other ?.?.?.?.

Ok so ill probably end up taking the diff out,,, but it may work :)

Just get stuck in and pull the diff, they are bloody heavy and some oil will drip on to you. All part of the Land Rover experience ! Wipe the diff housing out to remove any swarf and now is the time to change the diff oil seal if it is leaking. All simple work.

OK ok LOL

parts on order and ill be making a start at the weekend (well its better than painting the living room)

Now Diffs.....

Is it worth upgrading the diffs to 3.54 (i think) ratio and has anyone got a good pair for sale that will fit straight in???

:)

O the smell of EP90, here I come :)

Thanks Andy

Hmmm the old diff ratio chestnut. Only consider 3.54 diffs if you have a good strong petrol engine or a 200 TDI up front. I tried them on a 2.25 diesel and it was awful, lost all "Driveability" and constsant downshifts to third on a worn box aint fun.
