Hi Guys

Whats the biggest alt i can get and fit to a d1 300tdi,

il be running 2 red top batteries via a split charge system, off which there will be 2 winches spot lights, led bar front and rear, cb, radio, compressor etc.

100amp is all i seem to be able to find vie evil bay, has any body retro fitted another alt on saw 130 or 150 amp?

And is there any "water proof" ones, or at least better protected for when at P&P sites

Sounds like you'd be better with a twin alternator set up, I was looking for bigger on my 200 but decided 24V would be more entertaining with a motor swap on my front winch and a 24V one for the back ;)

If you don't have ac then it's dead easy to fit a twin alt but it aint that hard even if you do have ac as you can piggy back off the mountings.

iv got the mount for twin alt but im wanting to fit air con pump for compressed air, so needs to go, plus having 2 alts under bonnet means i can kill 2 alts at same time when im playing in water :)

You will only doing the same as me if you fit both, like I say, the extra alt can piggy back off the ac compressor, and alternators, believe it or not are harder to kill than you might think, but I wouldn't go to the hassle of getting a special one with higher output that could run a couple hundred quid and then plan to dunk it in soup, better to go for middle of the road 65A that went on loads of Land Rovers and use that dedicated to aux circuitry, winches etc, that way when you do kill it you can pick up another readily and cheap too ;)

100 amp will cope with all of that plus more, you'll only be charging one battery at a time and no doubt using only one winch at a time, for all the rest a 100amp will be over kill even if there was an occasion where they were all being used at the same time, do the numbers and see.

As for adding an additional alternator in an A/c equipped engine bay, don't forget to add a bonnet bulge. :D

I got one of the 100A ones from Barry4x4 on ebay for my 90, seems to be decently made and solid.

They sent me the wrong one at first and were very unapologetic about it though, but sorted it out in the end.
